SIS Public Speaking

Written by Quratallance Ali and Samarah Haque

Earlier this term, we had the privilege of travelling to John Paul College in Frankston to compete against nine other schools in the SIS Public Speaking Competition. The competition required us to present a prepared speech and an unprepared speech. The prepared speeches included topics such as whether sports drug cheats should be banned for life and that high school students should not be financially rewarded for achieving good grades.  We met with Mr. Gordon during lunchtimes to prepare our speeches. The competition was excellent.  Although we were nervous, we controlled our nerves and spoke clearly.  We enjoyed listening to the speeches of other students and learned much from the adjudicator’s feedback.  We were given five minutes to prepare the impromptu speeches.  We thought this would be scary, but the topics were fantastic. Impromptu topics included explaining who we consider to be a hero and what game we enjoy the most.  The adjudicator said that the best speakers were those who sounded passionate about what they were saying.  St John’s finished a very respectable fourth out of the ten schools competing. More importantly, we had fun and learned how to be better public speakers. Thank you to Mr. Gordon for giving us this opportunity.
