Learning Area - Religious Education

Mr Eamonn Farrelly (RE Leader & Coach)

It has certainly been a busy few weeks at St John’s and it’s been wonderful to see the great achievements within our Religion programmes. The CSYMA visit to St Mary’s was a particularly wonderful experience for both our students and the Grade 6s on their Confirmation Reflection Day.  Our heartfelt thoughts go out to everyone who are going through difficult times now. Hopefully you can all enjoy reading through the wonderful work of our students.

Student reflection from St Mary’s visit

On the 25th May, Alek, Sharomy, Tasha, Samana and, Bakhtawar from the CSYMA class visited St Mary’s Primary School.   The focus and purpose of our visit to St Mary’s Primary school was to get the Year 6’s to be familiarised with what ‘Confirmation’ is, since they would be receiving the sacrament soon.  We taught them to become the familiar face of what it means to live their spirituality as they moved on to the next stage of their life and can share their journey as committed Catholics.  We had first gone to St. Mary’s Church and had a mass where the students did Reconciliation, we then went to the school and ran a presentation that included various activities that had got the kids very excited and engaged.  This reflection day was an exciting time for the students soon making their Confirmation as they commit themselves to their Church and their personal faith journey by renewing the baptismal promise made for them.

Student reflection on Year 7 RE

This is a summary regarding what we have learnt in year 7 Religious Education.  What we have learnt so far includes an introduction to the Bible and a brief understanding of the school establishment. We also looked at the differences of the scriptures present in the Bible.

The first topic of 2021 involved researching the school history, this involved students having to research events that occurred in both De La Salle and Nano Nagle’s life.

As I mentioned above, the Year 7’s have had a brief introduction to different parts of the Bible, the New Testament and the Old Testament and this allowed us to differentiate between both sections. We also read Bible passages and defined what we have learnt from reading the text and how to relate it to our own lives and the world.

These activities have granted us a deeper understanding of the Bible and religion itself.
