What is a PSMT?

A PSMT is a Problem Solving and Modelling Task.  In all maths course for Year 12 students are required to complete at least one PSMT.  In Year 12 these tasks are required to be 2000 words.  As a mathematics department, it is imperative that we prepare our students for success in such a task.  Therefore, from Year 7 to 11, all students will complete a PSMT as one of their four assessment tasks.

PSMT are assessed on four criteria: Formulate, Solve, Evaluate and Verify, and Communication.

In Year 7 we introduce the idea of a mathematical report.  We ask students to solve a problem, to justify their answer, and to communicate using mathematical processes and terminology.

In Year 8 we introduce the terms assumptions and observations.  The students then repeat the same processes as for the Year 7 task, also evaluating the reasonableness of their solution.

In Year 9 we ask the students to document their assumptions and observations.  They solve the problem, stating any strength and limitations of their model, and evaluating the reasonableness of their solutions.

Currently Year 8 students are completing their PSMT.  Their task requires them to produce a scale diagram of the San Damiano Centre for a dinner dance.  They have specifications about tables shapes and sizes, and their dance floor must be fifteen to twenty per cent of the area of San Damiano.

Years 9 and 10 will be doing their PSMT in Term 3 and Year 7 in Term 4.

When your child receives their PSMT, I encourage you to talk to them about the task.  If you have any questions about the Problem Solving and Modelling Task, please contact your child’s Maths teacher.
