Years 7 - 9 Update

JUNE 2021

IMPACT In year 9

Earlier this term the college was very lucky to receive a grant from Regional Arts Victoria to engage artists in schools partly to compensate for COVID disruptions but mostly to promote a wide range of arts in schools . We welcomed Angelica Clunes,  as our community artist, to our IMPACT class where she has been facilitating a puppetry unit with our class.

From finger puppets, to sock puppets and shadow puppets students have been designing, creating and making a wide range of characters. The ongoing development is to create puppets plays to later perform to our younger students.

Outdoor Education Elective

Semester 1 saw the Year 9 Outdoor Education class develop their knowledge and understanding of a number of outdoor environments, as well as take part in a variety of outdoor experiences. It also had the students challenged by the impact of the Covid-19 restrictions placed on the college. As part of their program students explored a variety of environments in and around the City of Greater Geelong and the Surf Coast.

Some of the experiences included:

Canoeing

Hiking

Mountain Bike Riding

Trangia Cooking

Surfing

Year 9 Humanities

Students in 9F Humanities have been working on ideas and strategies that could be useful if energy crises arise in their lifetime. They proposed ways to live 'OFF THE GRID"

 Science: Organ dissections

As part of learning about Body Systems in Year 9 Science, students completed a week of dissections! Their aim was to build a strong understanding of what some real organs looked like, on the inside and outside. Students started with the brain, learning about the different lobes and structures, as well as the white and grey matter inside it. Students found this pretty gross (in the best way possible!), especially when they realised how soft and squishy brains really are!

In their second dissection, students explored the structure of the kidney, one of the key filters in our bodies. Students cut these oversized jellybeans open, identifying the structures that filter our blood and send urine to the bladder to get rid of waste. Students needed to safely use scalpels and other medical equipment

To finish off this unit of work, students used the knowledge they gained in the dissections and further research to understand diseases that affect these key organs, presenting their findings as presentations and infographics for their classes.
