Years 10 -12 Update
JUNE 2021
Year 10 into 11 subject selection
It’s that time of year where our Year 10 students start to look into their senior school programs. To support this process we will be having a Parent/Guardian Online Information session on Tuesday 22nd June, 7pm. This will provide parents and guardians with an opportunity to learn more about the two senior programs we offer at Northern Bay College, Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). In addition, we will be showing parents how students can apply for VCAL and enter their subjects preferences for VCE. Please join us as we support our Year 10 students to develop their pathways and senior school program options.
The link will be available for parents on Compass News feed later in the day. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Emma Horne, 11-12 Assistant Principal.

VCE Update
Further Mathematics students might now be 'go to' people for Financial advice - at least if they had their CASIO with them.
The recent School Assessed Coursework (SAC) entitled Financial Mathematics and Recursion which required the use of the CASIO Classpad and in particular the inbuilt program “Finance Solver”.
They had to apply their knowledge of recursions, interest rates, types of loans and depreciation to problem solve a range of financial scenarios and provide best case options.
Doing this work gives students an awareness of some of the financial transactions and terminology they will face following school.
The students did well in this assessment with Vinith achieving a perfect score. Well done.
This picture was taken in early June. Beautiful, peaceful and calm! Not always like that for the Outdoor Education Students.
Their semester saga needs a whole page of ts own! Please check it out on the page called Facing the Challenges
This semester in Ancient History classes students used 3D design tool TinkerCAD to demonstrate their knowledge of Ancient Mesopotamian architecture. Well done to Kyan and Cody for using their initiative to create a very realistic and detailed ziggurat temple.
Well done also to all staff and students for making a very smooth transition into remote learning for the most recent lockdown. The availability of student devices this year has been a big positive when at school and for remote learning, and this is due to the willingness of staff and students to embrace digital learning. One of the many tools discovered during remote learning was Google Arts and Culture, which allows anyone to do jigsaw puzzles collaboratively online. This has also made the transition back into the classroom as a great warm up activity as seen in the images.
Throughout semester one year 11 and 12 Media students have been working on production exercises that are accompanied by folio and practical works. Visiting the Top Screens exhibition was an excellent chance for them to view showcased work from exceptional media students from Victorian school.
The exhibition gave the students a chance to gain knowledge and skills from these students' works as well as an opportunity to reflect on their own work. The works that were exhibited were from students who experienced the 2020 lockdown, and from this experience, a multitude of feelings and emotions were evident in their productions. This connection to meaning and intention in a work was an inspiration to the students, assisting many of them with finalising thoughts and ideas for their own productions.
The students had a great time visiting the exhibition as well as making their way up to Melbourne via public transport, respecting social distancing rules and people around them.
VCAL Enterprise students have been heavily involved in their Restore Repair and Build Project.
Their hard work has resulted in a select number of furniture items which have been carefully prepared and are ready for sale.
Check out the options.
The Vcal seniors organized an opportunity shop on the 16/06/2021 at Goldsworthy. The purpose was to reduce waste and give clothes another chance in life along with combating fast fashion.
Thanks to the people who kindly donated and participated in the cause against fast fashion, we had a variety of different clothes and a generous amount of it.
The remaining donations will go to a great cause such as the salvation army and vinnies where they will utilize it by repurposing and donating it to those who needs it

Over past weeks in Year 10 science classes students have been studying genetics. This is a very timely study given so much news and media about tracing the source of many of the COVIC 19 strains to determine difference and similarity. They have undertaken a DNA extraction from a strawberry and learnt about how DNA codes for our genes. They created vegetable people (The banner header for this page) to look at patterns of inheritance and identify how traits can vary so greatly amongst offspring and then representing these differences as Punnett Squares.
Year 10 Media
Throughout the semester the students have developed and refined their skills in the production process using DSLR cameras for the production of their films and music videos, as well as editing software to arrange their footage to represent a story, meaning and style.
This term year 10 media students have been working hard on their media productions, working collaboratively to create short films as well as independently on music videos. Their music videos were created using found footage which was then assembled to represent a narrative and/or meaning. Below is an example of a student's work whose music video reflected the name of the track to tell their story.
Fiona Williamson Music video ‘Smile’
The latest production the students have been involved in is a short film, focusing on the genre of Thriller and the codes and conventions used to create suspense. Here are a few stills from students' Thriller production, ‘The Stalker’.
The StalkerDirected by Cassie Stevens - Actors Mahalia Foley & Tom Redmond - Edited by Nyanthel Jock.

Many Year 12 students are thinking about university preferences for 2022 and how they will investigate what courses are available To help with this Jo Parcell has created a resource that has a digital version of the most popular university course guides, and a link to the website of all the universities that participate with VTAC. You can also use the VTAC Website - Course Search option
Uni applications via VTAC are August 2nd - Sept 30. This is just 3 months away, and you should know by then what it is you want to study. So if uni is what you want to do in 2022 - these are your first 'go to' resources to help determine what is on offer, where and what they can do for you. Please take some time to start looking at these guides and as always - feel free to see Ms Parcell in the Careers Centre if you need any help.
