SWPBS – I will be an upstander
At the start of 2002 we launched a new expected behaviour that we have included in our expected behaviour matrix under our value of being Responsible – I will be an upstander.
An upstander is a person who speaks or acts in support of an individual or cause, particularly someone who intervenes on behalf of a person being bullied.
The SWPBS Team has developed a matrix on how to be an upstander, this involves:
1.Stop:
- Use the stop signal
- Speak up
- Support other upstanders
- Refuse to join in the unwanted behaviour
2. Walk:
- Walk away
- Encourage others to walk away
3. Talk:
- Tell a trusted adult
- Follow up – Are you ok?
We are asking all our students to be an upstander – bullying will stop 85% of the time within 10 seconds if the bystander becomes an upstander in a non-threatening way.
We would love our parents and carers to discuss how to be upstander and stand up against unwanted behaviour. We always want to maintain our safe and welcoming school.
