The Exquisite Corpse

Have you heard of the Surrealism art movement from the twentieth century?

Photography has been around since the 1500s, but was not widely available to the general public until after the invention of the camera in the 1800s. This change in technology resulted in artists looking for ways to stay relevant. Therefore, they began to look for new and exciting ways to create art.

During the Surrealism art movement, a group of artists experimented with different ways of creating images and tried to create strange new worlds through their art. They invented a game to make strange creatures. This game is known as the Exquisite Corpse. Players begin by folding a piece of paper into four sections. The first person draws a head. They then fold over their paper so that the next person cannot see what has already been drawn. That person then draws the torso.  Once the torso is completed, the paper is folded again and passed to another player who draws the waist and the legs down to the knees. The paper is folded over again and passed to the final player. The last player draws from the knees to the feet.

The drawing is unfolded to reveal strange and interesting creatures. Here are some examples created by our junior art students. They created some pretty amazing creatures!

Year 9 Buskers Excursion to the City

On Friday 3rd March, Year 9 Music students attended an excursion to the city to learn about busking. Busking is when a musician plays their instrument on the street to entertain the public and collect money.

The excursion was a lot of fun for everyone involved. We saw many different performers in the city; an accordion player who played some old tunes, a singer who sang popular songs, a pianist who improvised some intricate melodies using a looping pedal, and a man who plays popular melodies on the pan pipes. A few of the students also got to experience performing as a busker at the Melbourne Central Piano, where some Dandenong High students played the pieces they have been learning for people eating their lunch in the food court.

It was a great experience and prepared students for their own performances which are coming up later this term during our inaugural Busking Week.
