Celebrating the Year That Was

We are all familiar with the fact that 2020 has been a year like no other. As teachers and parents, we quickly became aware of the extra challenges that required us to share our expertise, be creative, and of course, demonstrate patience. Our number one priority was, is, and always will be the children in our care.

As the year comes to an end, we reflect on events and learning through an optimistic lense. Rather than focussing on what we have missed out on, we celebrate what we have experienced and achieved. Recently for example, students looked back at their very first piece of writing completed at the beginning of this year. It was extremely humorous to hear them critique their efforts, knowing fully well their skill set has grown and they are now competent writers. Seeing Foundation students actively engage in discussions, show empathy towards friends, justify their reasoning and thinking and develop personal and interpersonal skills, shows us they are resilient and able to cope with 'A year like no other'.

Road Safety

As part of our Inquiry Unit: "How to Keep Safe Under the Hot Australian Sun", students learnt about ways to keep safe as a pedestrian, a passenger and a bike rider. They explored traffic signs and their meaning and identified positive and law abiding behaviours.

2. Students worked collaboratively to design a Road Safety Circuit.

3. Road Safety Simulation

Finally, the children's learning was put to the test when they participated in a road safety simulation. It was impressive to see students exhibit positive behaviours such as wearing their helmets, riding on the correct side of the road, following road signs, watching out for pedestrians, abiding speed limits and looking both ways before crossing the road. The children had a lot of fun scooting and riding their bikes. The session ended with a few races, one of which tested them to see who could coast on their bike/scooter for the longest period of time. Here are some photos of the day:

Advent

As we enter Week 2 of Advent, students in Foundation are learning about the symbols and virtues associated with this time of preparing and waiting. It is pleasing to see students show an interest in exploring the Nativity Story and highlight the importance of the birth of Jesus Christ Our Saviour. We encourage you to discuss the virtues associated with Advent, with your child at home.

Final Farewell

It is with sadness The Foundation Team say goodbye to our wonderful 2020 families and students. We have thoroughly enjoyed teaching and getting to know this year's cohort, and we are extremely proud of each and every child's achievements.

We encourage students to maintain their interest in reading during the holidays and practise skills they have learnt this year, in real life situations at home. Learning should be interesting and fun.

Finally, we wish everyone a happy, holy and safe holiday. We look forward to seeing our 2020 Foundation children a little taller and ready to take on an exciting year ahead in 2021.
