I would like to thank all the students for a wonderful year of art-making, and all their parents and families for your encouragement and support during this tumultuous school year. We made it!
Last week the Year 5/6 students received their washed tie-dyed items. The activity went really well and every item turned out wonderfully. We used dye from a store called Kraftkolour in Thomastown. The colours stayed vibrant after washing because all the items were pre-soaked in a fixative called soda ash. I would like to thank Anna Fedele for first suggesting that we do this tie-dye activity, and for her help during the lesson.
Thank you, Anna!
In other 5/6 Art News - the animal totem pole display has been accepted into Catholic Education Melbourne's art exhibition in 2021! I will email current Year 6's about the details of the display next year.
The Year 3/4s have completed their Polaroid Poochies artworks. We used salt-dough to sculpt the face of the dog, then baked and painted them before creating a Polaroid frame. The Polaroid Poochies are inspired by "Ku" - the Camp Dog sculptures from Aurukun (Far North QLD.) The Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGoMA) says this about Ku: "Individually they are compelling, strange creatures, but together, these ku are a commanding pack." I think the same sentiment can be said about our Polaroid Poochies!
Over the last 2 weeks, the Year 1/2s have been practicing using their big juicy imaginations to turn squiggly lines into interesting drawings. Firstly we made a rubbing of a piece of string, then took rubbings from textures around the room to add texture and detail to our drawings. Last week we tried a new technique: we drew a squiggly line that crosses over itself to create a shape. Then we turned each shape into an interesting drawing. We even used water colours to add colour to our drawing BEFORE we started drawing. I'm always surprised and inspired by what our students come up with!
For their last activity for the year, the Foundation students made an artwork that shows a body and a face. The students were allowed to create any body they liked. They chose cartoon characters, animals, family member and made up people. We started by sculpting a face from salt dough. When they were baked, we painted the faces and drew a body to match. We then cut out the body and glued it and the face onto some background paper which we painted at the start of the term. I had a great time with the Foundation students this term and I was blown away by the quality of their work!
In other Foundation Art News - 16 of the 3D animal artworks have been chosen to go into Catholic Education Melbourne's big art exhibition in 2021. I will email to notify the students' parents this week with details about the exhibition.
