Year 5/6 News
Welcome
A big thank you to all the 5/6 families for their ongoing support over the course of this year. It goes without saying that there have been numerous challenges, however there was still much achieved through the hard work of everyone. Indeed looking at the results of the assessment the students have recently undertaken, they were generally very strong.
We look forward to sending off the Year 6's over the next week as they enter their final moments of primary school. This week, Headstart Week, has been an opportunity to expose the students to a range of different guest speakers and perspectives as they set themselves for secondary school. They will hopefully come away a little bit wiser and more confident as they take this major step forward in their education. Next week it is all about their graduation and the students having a chance to celebrate their final days of primary school.
Finally we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe New Year. Please enjoy the time with your families and a very well earned break!
The 5/6 Teachers
Reading
This term has been a fantastic opportunity to get the students back and have them finish the year in their Reading groups. The theme has been to have a fun but educational program which culminated in the students watching the movie Wonder as well as discussing and reflecting on the many important themes that ran through the film. All the 5/6 teachers were really impressed with the level of engagement and mature conversations the students were able to have while analysing the movie.
Writing and Spelling
In their Semester 2 reflections, many students said that 'Writing has been fun and exciting while creating a debate for the 5/6 Debating Podcast'. We will listen to the remainder in Week 11 and announce the winner of each debate.
In SMART Spelling, it has been an excellent opportunity for the students to revise what was taught during Spelling in Term 2 when we were learning remotely. They have been busily watching the old videos from Miss Kelly and revising graphs, digraphs, prefixes and suffixes based on their personal needs.
Thank you for your support with Writing and Spelling this the year, especially during online learning and the transition back to school.
Maths
In week nine of Term 4, the Year 5/6 students continued working on their Angles unit. Students participated in a variety of clinics in which they classified triangles according to their side and angle properties, and investigated the angle sum of triangles and quadrilaterals. In Headstart week, the students investigated the effect of combinations of transformations on simple and composite shapes, including the creation of tessellations, with and without the use of digital technologies.
