Year 3/4 News
Our Last Newsletter for 2020!
The teachers would like to firstly send to all of our parents a huge thank you of appreciation for all that you have done during the year. Many of you made many sacrifices during our home online learning to ensure that your child got the best out of their learning and the year wouldn't have been as successful without you.
To the students, we are incredibly proud of you all. Every single one of you have shone in your own ways throughout the year, some emotionally, others academically, but everyone grew in resilience and showed grit to improve in your own ways. You all deserve a restful and rejuvenating holiday ready for whatever will come our way in 2021!
Reading
For reading, we read a variety of persuasive texts, looking at key information and making connections to the topic.
We were able to summarise the main idea of the text using the key information.
Writing
Writing for the last two weeks have had an RE focus. We have written open-minded portraits about Zacchaeus and The Good Samaritan where we have written from the perspective of one of the characters from the story.
We were able to write about how the character was feeling, what they could see and hear.
We have also used used Writer's Notebook to unpack a seed about Advent. The seed we used was a painting by Jan Hynes - Bonding Time - A Nativity in Townsville which was a modern depiction of the Nativity. We could find many connections to the traditional nativity story and had some very insightful wonderings about the painting.
Maths
We have been focusing on both shape and financial maths this fortnight. A fantastic program you can all use at home when building or drawing is called 'Tinkercad'. This online program gives all uses the opportunity to imagine, design and create using 3D objects and figures interactively.
Students had to design their own object on Tinkercad (a toy, a house) and then build it using nets of paper which would then be turned into 3D objects. The students in 3/4 also learnt about budgeting and the differences between a 'need' and a 'want'. Hopefully we will all think differently the next time we go to the supermarket saying, 'I want..., I want...!'
RE
With the beginning of Advent, we are looking at Hope as our theme.
The Hope of Christmas allowed us to think of words that describe what Advent means to us.
Here are some of the words that we listed:
Renewal
Family
Love
Hope
Faith and Joy just to name a few.
Wellbeing
In Wellbeing, the Decision Making Wheel was one of our focuses. When we are faced with a problem we worked through all the steps needed when we consider the decisions we make.
Here is an example of the decision making wheel steps:
