Transfiguration

As the school takes part in devotions each day, they share the Bible reading. This year, we are also looking at a symbol that connects with the Bible reading. This week, our Bible reading tells of the Transfiguration and comes from Mark 9:2-9.

‘After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.’

The symbol that connects with this reading was in the form of a video – a video of a chameleon changing colour. Teachers are encouraging students to wonder about how a chameleon and the transfiguration of Jesus are connected. It will be interesting to hear the connections that the students can make. For me, the connection is about the changes in the chameleon and the changes in Jesus.

The glory of Jesus was revealed as he changed and shone brightly. He was then joined by the prophets, Moses and Elijah. Jesus was, and is, no ordinary man. And then, just in case we weren’t fully convinced that the changes in Jesus showed his greatness, the following happens:

‘Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”’ Jesus is proclaimed the Son of God by his Father… our heavenly father!

How amazing would it have been to see and hear the awesomeness of Jesus! In the story of Transfiguration, we are shown a glimpse of the greatness of Jesus that is promised to us through his gift of salvation.
