Classroom News - Year 1

Mrs Flynn and Mrs Suluma

Mid Term in Year 1

This week has seen parents visiting the classroom to attend interviews about their children. It has been lovely to finally have visitors into our learning space. If you have not yet made an interview time please do so as places are filling up fast.

In English, we are learning more digraphs and having a go with writing during Big Write on Fridays. Talk homework should be in students Home Reading folders that come home on Thursday. Please take some time to read with and listen to your child read at home. We are working with Tricky Words Set 1-3 ( found in the back of the Reading Diary)It would be great if your child can read and write these out so that it becomes automatic.

In Maths students continue to work with addition and subtraction. Year 1 also learned about Volume and Capacity. They made reasonable estimates of capacity and compared capacity by pouring from one container to another. Students had to determine how much space a model takes up by counting cubes. They also learned that different shapes can still take up the same amount of space.

In Religion we have just completed our Baptism unit. We are thankful to Fr Roel for taking the time to come and share about Baptism with us. We will begin our unit on Lent and Holy Week this week. Year 1 have also been looking at and discussing the stories from Project Compassion and sharing how they can 'Be More' this Lenten season.

Year 1 completed their History unit about 'The Past, Present, and Future'. They will be learning about Living Things in Science until the end of the term.

Although Year 1 did not get to go to the swimming carnival, we felt as if we were a part of it while creating our own 'Swimming with Me!' art based on David Hockney's work.

At the end of all the hard work, we get to celebrate. Everyone is a winner and keep up the wonderful work!
