Ice-cream

Solids, Liquids and Gases

Students have been learning about liquids, solids and gases in Science and applying this knowledge when making ice-cream. They have made a trial batch of vanilla ice-cream before conducting market research to help them select a popular flavour to trial for their ice-cream making companies. We will be looking at their final products to determine whether they have made a compound or a mixture when creating their new flavour.

English

In English, students have read the story of Pemulwuy an Indigenous man who fought the British around Sydney. They have then used his story as inspiration to write a short narrative based in the world of John Marsden and Shaun Tan's The Rabbits. Here is Lachlan and Cooper's interpretation.

Written by … Lachie and Cooper

One day in the scorching hot desert. The White people came marching with their wooden guns.

They started killing us and changing our land. Their guns hurt our sensitive ears. They took our kids and we never saw them again.

We thought it was the end of our race. But we formed an army we hoped it was the strongest in the land but think again. They had weapons that would kill three of us at a time. SO obviously they won every time.

We had no way to stop them. But we planned revenge.

The British took our kids, Pemulwuy was furious. SO he went to the colony and burnt the crops, slaughtered the sheep, and all of a sudden guns were fired. He hit the ground with 7 bullets he moved as quickly as he could but the colonists captured him and he was thrown into prison.

Sneakily, he escaped prison but still not recovered. The British quickly jumped on their horses with guns, but there was no sign of Pemulwuy.

They had spotted him in the distance, raced at him and caught him; they took him to prison.  Sadly, the fight was over for Pemulwuy.

Dramatic Religion Lessons

Students are continuing to explore the content of 'Reign of God' in their lessons, and in particular, moving towards looking at examples of discrimination in Jesus' time. Students unpacked the story of the Good Samaritan man which tells of a man that is bashed and left to have two people sadly walk by, while the third - a Samaritan man helps. Students brought the scripture passage to life by creating a skit that tells the story in a modern-day context. Students came up with settings such as the gaming world, the streets, in school, and the park, where discrimination can occur.
