Bird on a Wire photo taken by Charlie Sill
Charlie Sill in Year 8 is a budding photographer whose photo ‘Bird on a Wire’ has been shortlisted for the People’s Choice Award in the Kingston Arts Optika competition.
Charlie took the above photo in the Edithvale Wetlands whilst bird watching. He creatively used the restrictions of lockdown to further develop his skills in photography.
Charlie’s Art teacher, Ms Brierty, felt his photography was of such a high standard, she suggest him entering this competition.
The Kingston Arts Optika People’s Choice competition is currently live. You can check out shortlisted photos, and vote for Charlie via the link below.
Charlie says that what he most loves about photography, is that ‘you get to see stuff you don’t usually see or notice’.
To any boys interested in photography, Charlie says ‘Take photos of things you see, keep practicing, and you will develop your own style’.
Congratulations Charlie for finding and developing your hobby and passion. We wish you all the very best in this competition.

Charlie in 8.1 (my homeroom) has an excellent eye (probably two of them) and his entry into the Kingston Arts OptiKA 2020 photography competition is proof of this. Check out his entry here and then vote for him by clicking on the VOTE NOW: PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD button.
Finally, Liam Stevens is well on the way on his mission to take over the world, spending much of this year designing a working rocket. He taught himself Fusion 360 when he found that AutoDesk Maya wasn’t powerful enough, worked with Mr Marcos and Mr Koutsogiannopoulos for 3D printing and rocket fuel respectively. All in his own time and all for the love of learning.
Liam also entered the Origin Little Big Ideas competition, designing a simple slip on magnifier for smart phones.
