Cocurricular

Last year was a rather subdued version of the KWS Cocurricular program. Many of the activities that we have come to expect were altered or cancelled as various health guidelines took over school life. It is with a great sense of hope that we start 2021 with guidelines in place that allow for many of our programs to operate again.

Towards the end of last year many of our students were able to participate in Cocurricular pursuits. This again led to many of our students excelling in their chosen endeavors.

Congratulations must go to the following students/teams:

Phoebe Litchfield – Member of Sydney Thunder who took out the WBBL in an exciting final that Thunder dominated. A nice reward after spending a month inside a bubble.

Ben Jones – After training individually throughout the lock down period, Ben managed to win a Silver medal and Bronze medal at the NSW All Schools Athletics.

Oliver McLaughlin – Gold and Bronze medal at the NSW State Swimming Championships.

Collette Lyons – Gold and Silver medals at the NSW State Swimming Championships

Mercede Cornelius-Feltus – Bronze medal at the NSW State Swimming Championships

Wiburd Cricket – Had a dominate win at the end last year beating Shellharbour Anglican College thanks to a century made by Charlie Tink and a 5 wicket haul taken by Hugh Thompson.

Term 1 is ramping up over the next few weeks. We have already had our Interhouse swimming carnival last Tuesday 2nd February. This was the first whole school sporting event since the 2020 version of this carnival. It was a fantastic day of racing with the students really getting into the spirit of the event. Almost 200 races were held on the day demonstrating the excellent participation rates. The Championship Swimming Carnival will be held on Friday 12th February

The KWS cocurricular program will be in fully operational by the end of Week 3. The following is a list of when each program intends to start. Information will be shared with parents by each of the staff overseeing the programs below.

I look forward to watching our talented student group as they get the opportunity to engage in our rich and diverse Cocurricular program.

KWS Cricket Club continued to participate in the Senior BOIDC and ODCA competitions throughout the holiday period. The First and Second XIs had mixed results throughout the break but the holidays gave some junior cricketers and their fathers a chance to play together and at a higher level to develop their skills. Below are some match reports to highlight some significant results but the First XIs appearance in the Bonnor Cup T20 quarterfinals must be commended, along with the representative games for Orange by First Grade captain George Cumming and leg-spinner Nelson Shepherd. Lastly, it can be confirmed Phoebe Litchfield has been named Captain of Cricket for season 2020-21.

Reports

1st XI Bonnor Cup QF v Orange City

Man-of-the-match Jono Rasmussen struck the First XI’s highest score (for a student) of the season to date to put his side in a winning position in their quarter final meeting with Orange City at Wade Park on Friday 15 January 2021. He had already bowled with accuracy and venom in an excellent team bowling effort which restricted City to 138 from their 20 overs.

Captain George Cumming and opening bowler Mac Webster took 2 wickets apiece, the pair finishing with identical figures of 2 for 17 from 4 overs. Anyone would think they were related (they are). Leggie Nelson Shepherd bagged a caught-and-bowled. While the fielding in general was tight, too many dropped catches gave lives to City’s stronger batters. Charlie Tink gave a good account of himself as stand-in keeper for the absent James Glasson. Harry Priest and Hugh Thompson both made debuts in Bonnor Cup cricket, and both look like they’ll have plenty of games in that format in future.

Second XI batting rock Mr Ronald opened the batting with Rasmussen, the latter playing that role for the first time. Mr Ronald added a handy 9, however it was at the other end that the fireworks went off. Rasmussen blasted 54 from 36, taking the long handle to all of City’s fancied bowlers. He enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Cumming, who also kept finding the boundary for his crucial 39 runs. At one stage the pair had the score cruising at 2-87 and 3-12, needing less than a run-a-ball to reach the target. Rasmussen’s fine knock came to a close however caught on the boundary. Of the batters that followed Luke

Hunter looked most likely to carry the day, however he was dismissed with the score on 129. Cameos from Mr Crisp and Nelson Shepherd were short lived, and Priest had a tough assignment when he arrived at the crease needing 7 from the last 2 balls. The result ended with KWS losing by 4 runs.

City thanked KWS for a competitive game played in the right spirit, one opponent commenting that a close loss such as this one will teach these young players more than a commanding win.

Second XI v Centrals Black (Round 9)

A cool and windy day at Jack Brabham, with Kinross keen to make up for last weekend’s washout. Holidays allow an opportunity for a couple of dads play with their sons and we are grateful to them for helping out. Darryn kept wicket and was very tidy and allowed only a single bye, whilst his opposite number dropped catches and allowed extras to be 3rd highest score for Kinross!

We were sent in to the field and never let Centrals get going, with accurate bowling building pressure from both ends, backed up by outstanding fielding. Dylan Tucker took the 2 catches which came his way and Gus Staniforth and Sam Gee (amongst others) saved 20 runs each with their athleticism in the covers. Stuart Crisp set the tone with 8 overs, 3 maidens 3 for 10. Henry Forsyth continued his excellent form with 6 overs, 1 maiden 3 for 13. Harry Priest however, was unplayable, taking 3 for 7 from 5.1 overs with 3 maidens.

A steady opening partnership of 23 between Tucker (4) and Crisp (21) got things going, before both fell to Central’s best bowler, Faul. It needed the dependable Sam Gee (23) to come in and steady the ship and with help from Gus Staniforth, they ensured we got there for the loss of only 4 wickets.  An excellent all-round team performance. Leaves us 2nd on the ladder.
