Visual Arts

The Term 2 Unit of Inquiry is called 'Natural Disasters' which integrates with the Transdisciplinary theme- 'How The World Works'.

 

The Unit focuses on how different cultures express and represent, through art, the way the world works. With the focus on the four natural elements Fire, Earth, Water and Air students explored the visual inspiration of natural disasters and the variety of art techniques, mediums and artists who have incorporated them into their art.     

Students Participate In Creating:

  • A water design, inspired by Japanese artist Hokusai, for printmaking 
  • Fire paintings / drawing exploring the work of Australian artist Jan Senbergs
  • Clay sculptures, exploring the design and modelling of a hanging planter, inspired by the artist David Hicks, representing the element air
  • A design and stitch detailed pattern of a chosen natural disaster to a cushion

Japanese 

Term Focus:

  • Hiragana characters 
  • Natural disasters of Japan
  • SAKURA (Japanese Cherry blossoms)  

Unit Of Inquiry:

'How The World Works' 

Changes to the earth’s surface impact human lives. 

 

The Students Are Able To: 

  • Recognize and spell from T-line to W-line hiragana characters 
  • Tell what kind of natural disasters Japan has/suffered
  • Tell how Japanese people do evacuation drills and prepare for big earthquakes  
  • Spell the names of Japanese volcanoes in Hiragana characters  
  • *Write sentences (related to natural disasters) in Japanese such as 'Natural disasters are scary and we prepare for them'   
  • Write 2 sentences in Japanese and join them with a conjunction word 
  • Spell the names of natural disasters of Japan in KANJI characters   
  • Tell how Japanese people appreciate and enjoy SAKURA in their life 

Library 

The children are timetabled weekly, to borrow books from the library with their classroom teachers. During these borrowing sessions, they will gain a better understanding of library locations and the borrowing/returning procedures. 

 

The focus will be on reading for enjoyment, interest and information. The children will have the opportunity to consolidate their literacy skills and further their development in literature appreciation. 

The library program also supports and extends the units of inquiry being studied in each year level and provides classrooms with resources to enrich the units offering varied forms of information. 

 

Physical Education 

Unit Of Inquiry:

'How We Express Ourselves' 

Invasion Games: AFL and Touch Football 

Circus Skills and beginning of athletics activities. 

  

Focus:  

  • Refine the basic and complex motor skills of passing, kicking, throwing and catching in game situations   
  • Continue refining the concepts of attacking and defending and moving into space during modified games  
  • Adapting these modified skills into game scenarios for AFL, Rugby, Oz Tag and experiencing the rules to some of these games

Fitness warm up activities to develop running techniques for Cross Country experience and competition. 

 

Circus skills to enhance balance, hand eye coordination, strength, flexibility, rotational movements and creativity with equipment: diablo, spinning plates, Poi, hoops, clubs and devil sticks. We are also developing perseverance, confidence and resilience with this program to encourage students to take a risk and try all activities. 

  

  

Concepts:

Responsibility- to encourage students to take ownership of their own actions when performing movements as well as assisting others.

 Drama:

This unit delves into both the skills of dramatic performance and life skills directly associated with acting and performance such as confident posture, clear speaking, using face and body to express emotion and working collaboratively with others. 

 

We Are Working Within 4 Areas Of Drama:

  • Voice 
  • Body
  • Emotion
  • Stage Direction

These Are Explored Within: 

  • Drama Games and Drama Exercises targeting specific skills 
  • Exploring characterisations and dialogues  
  • Tackling short scenes from our main performance piece – Cinderella 

  

Students rehearse in small groups and then perform to their classmates. And of course, they know how to be good audience members!
