What's Happening In Our Classrooms

The Grade 6 classrooms have been a hive of activity this term as students have worked diligently in all areas of the curriculum.

Literacy:

We began the term learning about discussion texts. We covered a variety of interesting topics and had in depth discussions for and against on all manner of topics such as Should E Scooters be Banned? Fast Fashion and Is Screen Time a Growing Problem?

The students learnt about the structure and language features of discussion texts.  They also learnt about the different time connectives that they can use when writing as well as writing counter arguments.  For the remainder of the term we will be learning to write explanation texts which will be the ideal text type for our next Inquiry unit of work on chemical and physical science.

Mathematics:

The students have been learning about fractions and have compared and ordered fractions.  They added and subtracted fractions with the same and unlike denominators and found fractions of a collection. They made connections between equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages. Students are currently exploring strategies to solve addition worded problems using horizontal and vertical numbers.  They have been learning to identify a variety of graphs and to interpret displayed data.

Inquiry:

The students have been working through the Young Leaders program this term which aims to develop leadership skills. The program develops confidence, character and citizenship in students. Alongside this program, the Grade 6 students have been learning about the three levels of Government, the electoral process, the Constitution, how laws are passed and Democracy.  The students will showcase their learning and understanding of our inquiry topic through a range of written, recorded and visual presentations.
