Year 8 Journey this Semester
We are thrilled to share with you the exciting journey our Year 8 students embarked upon this semester. Through inquiry-based learning, our students have actively engaged in Science, Mathematics and Design Technology subjects, exploring concepts and applying their knowledge innovatively.
In Science class, students kicked off the semester by designing roller coasters to witness the captivating transformation of potential energy into kinetic energy. They were tasked with creating intricate structures that allowed marbles to navigate down from the top of the roller coasters smoothly. This hands-on experiment sparked their curiosity and deepened their understanding of energy conversion processes.
In Mathematics subject, our students have been on an enriching mathematics journey during this term. Our students have engaged in various fascinating mathematical concepts and activities, from solving linear equations to exploring number systems and analysing data. They have explored distance-time graphs to investigate speed rates.
As a hands-on experience, our students recently took part in a run on the Multicourts, where they calculated and compared their peers' speeds based on the distance-time graph data. This practical application allowed them to witness firsthand how mathematical concepts can be applied to real-world scenarios, fostering a deeper connection between theory and practice. Additionally, by exploring and analysing their peers' ratio sizes of heads and hands, our students have gained a deeper understanding of proportionality and its applications, enhancing their mathematical reasoning and critical thinking skills.
In Design Technology, our students have been immersed in an ongoing project to construct solar-powered cars. Guided by their teachers, they dove into renewable energy and harnessed their creativity to build functional and sustainable vehicles. Through trial and error, they overcame challenges, refined their designs, and witnessed firsthand the power of harnessing the sun's energy to propel their cars forward.
Beyond solar-powered cars, witnessing the students' exploration and experimentation with other renewable energy projects was truly inspiring. They enthusiastically embarked on constructing solar-powered windmills and lanterns, further expanding their understanding of different applications for renewable resources. These projects encouraged critical thinking and problem-solving and instilled a sense of environmental stewardship among our Year 8 cohort.
Throughout the semester, observing our students' growth and development in integrating their subject knowledge has been remarkable. This interdisciplinary approach has nurtured their holistic understanding of the world around them and equipped them with essential skills for the future. Their ability to embrace inquiry-based learning and integrate subject knowledge in such a practical manner is a testament to their creativity, critical thinking, and passion for sustainability.
