Today is National Sorry Day, continuing with National Reconciliation Week (see information below). We are fortunate to have Majeda Beatty performing on Wednesday next week, 31st May.

Her performance is described as:

The flags will be discussed and Majeda will present and demonstrate various instruments, artefacts and costumes specific to each culture as well as the importance of ochre and the significance of the body paint designs in aboriginal culture. She will perform and teach dances for audience participation.”

NAIDOC Week is Sunday 2 July 2023 – Sunday 9 July 2023.

We have booked an Aboriginal artist, Mali Isabel, on Wednesday 5th July (last week of term. All students will be completing a piece of artwork. More information to come later this term.

Please note there is no cost to students for the performance or art session. The school will cover all costs.

National Sorry Day

26 May On Sorry Day thousands of Australians from all walks of life participate in memorial services, commemorative meetings, survival celebrations and community gatherings to honour and commemorate the Stolen Generations.

National Reconciliation Week

27 May – 3 June National Reconciliation Week celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People and other Australians. National Reconciliation Week also commemorates two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the anniversaries of the successful 1967 Referendum and the High Court Mabo Decision. It is a time to celebrate and learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and explore how each of us can contribute to the national reconciliation effort.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2023, Be a Voice for Generations, encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise.

National NAIDOC Week

Sun, 2 July 2023 – Sun, 9 July 2023

Theme -

For Our Elders

We're proud to announce that the 2023 National NAIDOC Week theme is For Our Elders. Across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families.

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Held from the first Sunday to the second Sunday in July, this week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Tucker Trail Project Update

Today at the Assembly, students shared the information below about the Tucker Trail Project. Destiny and Xavier are in the Project Focus Group and Eva represented Mrs Jolley and Madame Mawson’s Year 3/4 class, whose students are collecting data about the garden.

Destiny

Last year in term 4 a group of students were part of a focus group to research about native plants to grow in a Tucker Trail garden next to the oval and new playground. Some of the plants will be bush tucker and some plants were chosen to attract birds, butterflies and wildlife. The plants were chosen from our research. Ms Dowd, Ms Gossink and Ms Hazelwood’s R/1 classes, Mrs Jolly and Madame Mawson’s 3/ 4 class and Ms Wood’s year 4/ 5 class planted plants in week 2 this term and are caring for the plants.

Xavier

Students from the focus group explained to the classes information about the plants. Please remember that the flags around the garden means that the area is out of bounds to look after the plants until they grow.

Eva

Alexis, Isaac and I are in Mrs Jolley and Madam Mawson’s class. We have been going to the Tucker Trail Garden each day to count the number of birds, butterflies, bees and other insects in the garden. Some of the plants were chosen to attract wildlife. We will be surveying the garden for the rest of the year to see if there is more wildlife in the garden as the plants grow.

Check in future newsletters for more information about the Tucker Trail and Garden.
