BHCS WINNER OF 2023 SPORTS GROUP : ASIA PACIFIC PROJECT PARTNER - PRIMARY SCHOOL COURTS & OVAL PROJECTS

By Liz Miko (Business Manager)

Those who have seen the new sport facilities in our primary school will agree that these new facilities have been an excellent addition, adding a new dimension of sport and play for our students. Well, it turns out others have agreed, with Belgrave Heights Christian School’s primary sports facilities being awarded as the winner for the best ‘Feature Project’ in the small to medium sports category at this week’s Sports Group Awards in Hawaii! This award recognises and celebrates the most outstanding projects from the past 12 months, so it’s it quite an achievement!

As with all of our projects at BHCS, this was certainly a team effort. I wish to thank the PE staff who contributed to the designs and also to BS Callow Earthworks and GrasSport Australia who partnered with us to make our plans come to reality. Thank you!

 Upcoming Projects:

Wildspace’ Natural Playground (Primary) – This project is close to completion. We should have more information and a grand opening for our students in the coming weeks!

Sport Courts (Secondary) – You may have seen the stunning new all-weather structure which was constructed over our secondary courts during the term break. However, this project is not yet complete. After winter, we will be resurfacing the courts with a rubberised hardcourt finish and to complete the project, new basketball backboards, netball rings and volleyball equipment will also be installed.

YEAR 9: DEMOCRACY IN ACTION!

By Katherine Hewitt (Secondary Teacher)

A busy Term 1 ended with our Year 9 students participating in a ‘Government and Democracy’ incursion as part of the Civics and Economics curriculum. All students took part in a project-based learning assessment, where they formed political parties and campaigned around the policy platform of bringing more sustainability and service to Belgrave Heights Christian School.

Over the course of two days, students worked collaboratively to derive policies, advertisements, and speeches to present to their classes. The top three parties were then selected and presented to the entire year level, culminating in a full, preferential election. We were delighted to congratulate the overall winners of this election, the 'Belgrave Green Gods', for their strong win following the distribution of preferences.

This project not only provided students with a fun and interactive way to learn, but also gave them valuable skills in critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. We are incredibly proud of the effort and dedication that all students put into this project, and thank all staff involved for their support and assistance with our Civics programme.

A YARRA VALLEY CULINARY JOURNEY FOR VET COOKERY STUDENTS

By Glenn Booth (VET and VCE VM Trainer/Teacher)

Last week our VET Cookery students went out to the Yarra Valley to visit some successful hospitality businesses and sample some of their amazing regional foods.

First up was 'Yarra Valley Dairy'  where we learnt about the cheese making process, sampled cheeses and learnt about their business.  We then walked through the market store to see some items from other local hospitality businesses.

Next was, 'Yarra Valley Smokery' where we learnt about the smoking method of cookery along with its benefits and challenges. We sampled some of their brisket and learnt about the bark and smoke ring on that product, we also tried a Cubano sandwich among other things.

We stopped briefly at 'Yering Station Winery' to explore wine making and saw a helicopter land with some people coming in for lunch. Yering Station winery is one of the earliest and most awarded wineries in Victoria, it is also where I started working in hospitality as a waiter and began my apprenticeship as a Chef.

To finish off the day we stopped in at 'Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery' where we viewed the chocolate making process and enjoyed a chocolate taste testing session.

It was a bonus to be there during their rocky road event with 31 different types of rocky road available!

Feedback from all the businesses was impressive, our students really paid attention well and wanted to learn. We are proud of our students for representing our school so well.

It was another great experience and rich learning for our VET Cookery students!
