Year 7 Interschool Netball

UNITE: On Thursday 25th May, selected Year 7 Students represented the College and participated in interschool netball at Geelong Sports Hub.

Although they did not make finals, both teams had a win and the girls played so well together, supported each other, and represented Surf Coast proudly.

Year 8 FUSE - The Road to Winter

STRIVE: The Year 8 students are studying the text The Road to Winter written by local author Mark Smith.

They have all committed to reading the text or listening to chapter recordings on a schedule, and each week we have Spoiler Friday where the students add the events of the section they read that week to their Narrative Plot Structure Arc. The students have been discussing the novel and it has been great to see them engaged in reading.

Year 8 Art

FLOURISH: Our Year 8 students got their creative on in a collaborative task.  They studied coral bleaching and in response to this, students created their own piece of bleached coral/sea life.

They also created some wonderful lino prints, their inspiration taken from the Edgar Allan Poe poem, 'The Raven'.

Year 9 Street Food

"Hi, our names are Kiarra and Phoebe and we are in Year 9.

This term in Street Food with Ms Harris we made American style beef burgers.

The burgers had beef mince, Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, clove, crushed garlic, chopped parsley, chopped oregano, bread crumbs, egg, salt and black pepper.  Overall the finish product looked amazing and tasted even better!"

Year 9 Gordon Tertiary Futures Program

STRIVE:  During Term 2, the Year 9s have been attending the Gordon TAFE to participate in the Gordon Tertiary Futures Program.  This program offers Year 9s a chance to preview a range of tertiary studies offered by the Gordon and experience possible VET pathway and career opportunities. FLOURISH:  Year 9 Outdoor Education students spent a day rock climbing and abseiling at the You Yangs.

Year 9 Coastal Guardians

RESPECT: Our Coastal Guardian students participated in a conservation activity of removing grassland broad-leafed weeds.   Our students visited an historical rehabilitation success site and look at the role of volunteering/friends groups, land management change and the impact, for example, the need for soil scalping and cultural burns.

The Coastal Guardians program aims to increase the environmental awareness of our students and examine coastal issues whilst promoting and encouraging social responsibility and environmental stewardship.

Year 10 Geography

RESPECT: As part of their ‘Environmental Change and Management’ topic, Year 10 Students analysed the impact of urbanisation on local waterways such as wetlands and beach fronts. Yesterday’s excursion took place at the Kaaraf Wetlands, where students collected fieldwork data (water testing, fieldwork sketches and land surveys) to complete their fieldwork booklet.

This data is extremely important, as it is required for the completion of the Common Assessment Task for Year 10 Geography.

Year 10 Literature Class

STRIVE: The Year 10 Literature class this Term studied Shakespeare’s classic tragedy ‘Romeo and Juliet’.  The culmination of this work is a theatrical performance of a selected scene. Each group has been working diligently on selecting, planning, rehearsing, and delivery (including sword play!) of their scene.  Each student in the group has taken responsibility for learning their lines, in Shakespearean, off by heart and understanding what they mean.

It's been a pleasure to watch these students tackle some strong, difficult language and develop an understanding of how Shakespeare’s sonnets are constructed.  Through group reading, summarising, questioning, and discussion, this class has worked together to create engaging, unique performances which they should be very proud of.
