On Thursday, we held our beautiful "Grandparents’ and Special Friends' Day." The morning commenced with a Liturgy, celebrating the gift of grandparents and special friends and the precious bonds we share with them. Our Reception to Year 6 girls then took centre stage, sharing special memories from their grandparents’ lives and performances of their favourite Disney songs spanning back 100 years.
Poetry, heartfelt words of gratitude, a choir performance, and an art showcase were also woven through the performance. Our Grandparents and special friends also enjoyed classroom visits and a scrumptious morning tea! We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the talented Ms. Lisa Schulz, whose dedication and choreography brilliantly prepared our girls for the show. It was a wonderful morning, celebrating family and the fabulous achievements of our girls.

Last Tuesday, the 16 May, our Junior School students participated in a range of Mathematics Incursions. These incursions were facilitated in partnership with Felstead Education, a Victorian-based organisation who are sponsored by the Mathematical Associations of Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia and South Australia. In the morning, our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 students were engaged in a live Maths Show that sparked their curiosity about Maths and the power of numbers. During the show the girls were captivated by a range of Maths-related sketches, magic tricks and puzzles. They were also captivated by a number of stories about the history of Maths and famous women pioneers in Maths.
Later in the day, our Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students engaged in the ‘Amazing (Maths) Race’ around the College. The girls worked in cross-year level teams of 4 students (Year 3s and 4s combined, then Year 5s and 6s combined), to solve a series of Maths Challenges as they raced around the world. The race commenced in Greece (the Hall), where students were introduced to the race with a unique video clip highlighting key elements of Maths history and the diversity of Maths around the world. At each country, students were given a Maths Challenge to solve. Using their location key, the correct solution to each Maths Challenge revealed the next country they needed to race to. The girls raced from Greece, to Arabia (Nature Play), to Egypt (Computer Lab), to France (Cubby House in Quad), to America (Hall), to Brazil (Playground), to India (Tennis Courts) and their last destination was China (Hall). The first teams to solve all the challenges and cross the finish line were crowned the champions of the Amazing Race. Congratulations to our winners in the Year 3 and 4 race (Savannah Yeates, Sophie Andruchowycz, Lucinda Kennedy & Sienna Mackay) and the winners of the Year 5 and 6 race (Anja Wosha, Penelope Harris, Jemima Neck & Kalani Nashar).
It was such a joy to witness our students thriving and embracing the wonder and challenges of Mathematics in a new context outside the classroom.

Poo, dung, scats, droppings, manure – whatever you call it, looking at and working with animal faeces is an important part of the job for zookeepers, vets and scientists.
Year 3 students had a terrific time at Monarto Zoo last week, participating in their annual Camp. They had to clean up the giraffe’s sleeping quarters, helping those tall animals stay healthy and happy.
They raked and bucketed the poo, before taking it to a giant compost heap.
Initially many students were horrified by the job but quickly realised that is a surprisingly easy, clean and odour free task. Giraffes do lots of small black balls that spread out in piles on the ground. Think of Fru Chocs! The girls mucked in and got the job done in no time.

The new location of the Loreto Little Library (Junior School Quad) has proved so successful that it is empty! We would welcome any donations of novels (suitable for Years R-5) to pop in there for our enthusiastic swappers. Donations can be left at the Junior School Office, or pop in to the Micklegate Library 😊
