As our Junior Students filed into the BPAC with excitement in the air, little did we realise over 2 million students in libraries, schools, pre-schools, family homes, childcare centres, bookshops, children’s hospitals and communities across Australia and New Zealand were doing the same!
Each year, Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) selects one picture book for a simultaneous read-aloud event. The Speedy Sloth (Rebecca Young, illustrated by Heath McKenzie) was read for the 23rd National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS). We tapped into the Singapore Zoo to view real sloths just hanging. They do like to sleep for 15-20 hours a day! In fine voice we woke up the character in the book, Speedy the Sloth, to run the race, a race his peers thought was impossible to finish! It just shows ‘hard work pays off’, not a bad life lesson to learn.
Our new resident Library sloths needed a name. We received so many entries from students and teachers across the year levels from Prep to Year 12! Congratulations to Bruce Zheng (2R) and Taylor Russel-Rockliff (8.7) for the winning names Oscar and Lexi. I’m sure our sloths are going to be loved as we share our love for all things to do with books!
