So, you want to be a Veterinarian?

A number of students who have been around animals for much of their life, aspire to become Veterinarians (Vet).   Vets don’t just cure and care for animals, they also need to deal and empathise with the owners, often in very emotional circumstances.

Some of the characteristics you need include: a desire to help animals, an aptitude for analytical thinking and problem solving, quick and calm decision-making skills, teamwork and leadership, strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and an enjoyment and understanding of science. Does this sound like you?

If so, there are a few things you need to be aware of.  Firstly, entry into Veterinary Medicine is very competitive.  There is only one university in Victoria (The University of Melbourne) offering this course so, if you are serious, you may need to study interstate.  Secondly, you must choose subjects that will meet the prerequisites and gain the ATAR needed.  Some courses have additional entry requirements such as interviews, written applications etc.  Research all pathways as there are quite a number available.

The University of Melbourne àScience/Veterinary Medicine (minimum 6 years).  Veterinary Medicine is a post-graduate course therefore, you need to choose an undergraduate course as a starting point.  Many students choose to study Science and, depending on their grades, transition into Veterinary Medicine.  This year, the lowest ATAR was 98.50 (this course guarantees entry into Veterinary Medicine if your performance in Science meets the standards wanted). Pre-requisites included at least 30 (EAL) or 25 English, at least 25 Maths Methods or Specialist Maths, at least 25 in one of Biology, Chemistry of Physics.  So, what if I have the pre-requisites but not the ATAR?

Two popular alternative pathways include completing a straight Science degree (where there is no guarantee into Veterinary Medicine - lowest ATAR 85 at Uni Melb) and then applying to go on to study Veterinary Medicine, or the Bachelor of Agriculture (with pre-req subjects – lowest 64.60 Uni Melb).  All pathways have additional requirements and students need to check these thoroughly. These alternatives will often take a student 7 years to qualify.  There are other pathways, so research is needed.
