Where We Are In Time & Place
Year 3 - Term 2, 2023
Cultures change over time
As an International Baccalaureate world school, authorised to teach the Primary Year’s Programme, we explore six transdisciplinary themes each year.
Our next unit of inquiry provides students with the opportunity to investigate various aspects of Aboriginal culture and explore the different perspectives of the impact of settlement.
We are aiming to foster the students’ curiosity about the early history of our country and the importance of place to us all. We will explore the unique stories and beliefs owned and held by different Australian Aboriginal groups. We will discover the meaning of the Dreamtime stories and how they are expressed through art. We encourage our students to think and extend their knowledge through research, stories and investigating artefacts.
The year three students will also extend their knowledge of Australia through the exploration of maps from the past including Aboriginal maps, which will be compared and contrasted with current maps. This will help the students become more familiar with the map of Australia and allow them to identify the changes that have occurred over time.
The students will conduct their own research and prepare a presentation about a Notable Indigenous Australian to share with their class.
The students will attend a VR incursion by Indigenous Australia to further develop their knowledge of indigenous culture.
We continue to encourage our children’s independent action inspired by our Units of Inquiry. It may be independently finding items that help them explore aboriginal culture such as particular books on their bookshelf, artefacts or photos. It also could be in the form of student initiated drawings/posters/research.
We celebrate our students’ ACTION every day in our classrooms. Please celebrate any action you see occurring in your home.
