Careers News

Keep up the good work!

Well done to all the students who finalised and submitted their course selections for 2021.  It’s been great to chat to so many students and families over the past four weeks about the opportunities which they have to choose from NHS’s wide range of courses and curriculum.  Despite the challenges of limited face-to-face teaching this year, students are pushing forward with their plans and showing real fortitude and resilience in their approach to getting through this time.

The newsletter this week is mainly focussed on Year 12 students, who are preparing for their transition from school, and into the next steps, at the end of this year.  It has been a particularly challenging time for the Class of 2020. There are many supports and programs in place to assist students, and to recognise the very unique challenges of this year.

A reminder to also keep an eye on the ‘Weekly Careers Newsletter’ tab via the Careers Page on myNHS.

RMIT Ready Set Design: Year 11 & 12 Folio preparation courses

Ready Set Design is for Year 11 and 12 students who are interested in applying for university or TAFE design courses. Delivered via Microsoft Teams, the workshops will introduce students to skills and top tips for designing a winning digital folio and help them prepare for a design selection interview.

Folio Bytes

A teacher in RMIT’s School of Design will take students through the process of creating and customising a digital design folio. Students will be introduced to a free online platform that they can use to host their folio and find out what makes a successful design folio. 2 x available sessions: Wednesday 26 August, 4.30pm – 6.30pm OR Saturday 29 August, 2.30pm – 4.30pm.

Interview Bytes

Students will hear from a panel of RMIT staff and students and learn what to expect from a design course interview. They’ll be able to ask questions, get top tips on how to prepare, and learn more about what it’s like to study design at RMIT. 2 x available sessions: Wednesday 23 September, 10am –11am OR Saturday 26 September, 10am –11am

Places are strictly limited. Interested students must visit this Eventbrite page, select the session/s they wish to attend, and provide their details.

Early entry programs for University in 2021

There is information on the Year 12 Connect Page about a range of Early Entry programs for Universities.  The following universities have opened up programs which will consider a student’s Year 11 academic report.  Students can apply for these programs to receive an early offer (conditional on completing VCE and meeting any prerequisites).  These programs do not use the ATAR for students who are approved, and offers could be received as early as the end of August.  The following universities have early entry programs which use Year 11 results/schools recommendation:

  • Swinburne University
  • ACU
  • UTAS

Victoria University also has an ongoing policy of non-ATAR entry for their courses.  They will consider a range of criteria from applicants.

Year 12 VTAC Applications

The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) has opened for applications for 2021. We were unable to hold an information evening this year, however there is a  NHS powerpoint presentation for students and parents herewhich explains the system and processes for course applications, payment, Special Equity & Access Scheme (SEAS), and scholarships.

Students will be working on their VTAC applications during Connect sessions this term, with the guidance of their tutors.  Any student who requires additional assistance with their application can make an appointment to see me via the Careers page on myNHS.  I will also be available to answer questions from students via Webex during the next two extended Connect sessions.
