Teaching & Learning 2020

Author Visit- Dr Cameron Stelzer, The Story Doctor
On Friday the 14th of August, we have a special visit from Author and Illustrator Dr Cameron Stelzer. Dr Cameron is visiting Glenore Grove SS to run workshops with our P-6 students. Prep-Year 2 students will enjoy an interactive Big Screen Book Reading and follow-along drawing activity with Cameron. Year 3-4 students will be taking a behind-the-scenes look at creating a book, and applying their own creative components. Year 5-6 students will be exploring techniques to create blockbuster action stories – think gripping suspense scenes, epic action encounters and hold-on-to-your-seat cliff-hangers. Students and teachers are looking forward to a great day!
In conjunction with the Author Visit, Glenore Grove SS families have a special opportunity to purchase signed and personalised copies of Cameron’s books at special prices. Individual books are $15 each and there are also exclusive book sets available. Forms and payment can be returned the following Monday, 17 August, to the Office.
National Science Week2020
15th to 23rd August 2020. This year's theme is DEEP BLUE: innovation for the future of our oceans. Students will be engaging in activities at school during this week.
Academic Reporting
Teachers are currently finalising your child's semester 1 report card. Please be mindful that with all schools learning under a modified curriculum during term 2, Education Queensland schools are doing reporting differently. Assessment for term 2 and reporting for the whole semester will reflect the nature of learning over this time. At GGSS students will receive a mark for English, Maths, Science and Health for the semester, along with a comment regarding the learning that has taken place. Report Cards will be emailed out next Friday! Please make sure your contact details are current with the office.
Parent/Teacher Interviews
These will be held 2/9/2020. Links to register for these interviews will be sent out later. We will also have phone interviews available for families to engage with our staff for safety.
Premier's Reading Challenge
There is still time to get your reading logs in for this! The challenge closes on the 28th August. Contact Mrs Cubis if you need a new sheet. We would love to see all our students get a certificate for reading from the Premier.
The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual statewide initiative for Queensland state and non-state schools and home-educated students from Prep to Year 9, as well as children (aged up to 5 years) enrolled in an early childhood centre.
The Premier's Reading Challenge aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning.
In 2019, more than 2.31 million books were read by more than 168,000 Queensland children and students from 937 schools and 386 early childhood centres.
