Classroom News - Year 6

Maths

In Mathematics, we have been working on the Cartesian Plane and plotting coordinates. Students are using the phrase, " You need to learn to crawl before you walk" as a reminder to plot the x-axis before the y-axis. This skill is useful when using maps and students are applying their new found skills to read maps and follow directions using a map.

History

Students have been learning about human rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We have used our reading rotations to unpack the complex language that is contained in the document and identified ways these rights apply to our own lives.

English

Students have been exploring how to structure a persuasive argument and the persuasive devices they can use. They have been learning how to use PEEL (ask them what it stands for) to structure their persuasive paragraphs. We are getting back into our Big Write routine, Talk Homework is sent home at the start of the week, and also posted to Google Classroom. We have been using short video clips as stimulus for our writing tasks in class and today began work on "The Alchemist's letter.

Questions to Ask Your Children

These are things we have covered in class that you can ask your children about:

  1. Name two persuasive devices and give an example of how to use them.
  2. Get your child to explain what, "You need to learn to crawl before you walk/climb" means.
  3. Tell me about the human rights you have been learning about and how they apply to refugees, Indigenous Australians and kids in general.
