Classroom News - Year 2

Home Readers

We have been busy assessing the children in Year 2 to discover how they are progressing in English and Maths. We have completed spelling, reading, comprehension and writing tests over the past 2 weeks since the children have returned to on site learning. At present we are using the PM Reader kits to update the PM level each child is currently on. This data will help us to plan appropriate teaching and learning moving forward and will allow us to remediate students who need to be caught up.

The philosophy of the PM Readers is that children learn to read well if they are encouraged to use a variety of skills, processes and behaviours, rather than a particular method or approach. When children are learning to read they should be given materials that have been carefully crafted to meet their needs; books that give them, from their earliest experiences with the printed word, success, enjoyment and understanding.

In Year 2, we are striving to have all children on a PM level 22 before the end of this year. Many have already achieved this benchmark and others are moving towards it. Your child will experience the most success in reading when school and home work together. Reading with your child at home will help your child in all areas of school. Research shows the importance of reading on a daily basis in developing their use and understanding of vocabulary.

We would like to start our home reading program again this week.

We ask you to fill in the journal with your child each week night. Red (2F) and blue (2S) home reading folders are due at school every Thursday so we can change readers and check the journals.

Library

Thursday is Year 2's library day, so children need to remember to bring any borrowed books and their book bag to school on the same day they switch their readers.
