Year 9 and 10 Subject Choices

Dear Parents / Guardians,

As your son / daughter completes the Stage 4 curriculum, it is now time to consider subject choices in stage 5 (Years 9 and 10). All students entering Stage 5 at Marian Catholic College must study the mandatory subjects of:

  • Religious Education
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Human Society and Its Environment
  • Physical Education, Health and Physical Development

In addition to the above mandatory subjects, students can choose 2 elective subjects. These subjects are designed to cater for the interests of the students and help prepare students for future subjects in stage 6 (Years 11 and 12).

Students should choose elective subjects based on their:

  • interest
  • future career prospects
  • strengths
  • preparation for subject(s) in Years 11 and 12

Students should not choose subjects based on what their friends are doing.

To help with this process at Marian Catholic College and to inform you of NESA requirements for Stage 5 (Year 10 RoSA), students will meet for an information session on Wednesday 26th August. Marian will also be providing ZOOM sessions, in class, to inform the students of the type of elective courses on offer and to provide more information regarding these. This is designed to help students make informed decisions about the courses on offer.

Due to COVID restrictions, Marian will not be able to hold an Information Night for parents.

Students will, however, be presented with a Subject Selection form and have access the Year 8 into 9 Curriculum Guide and Subject Selection Booklet from the Marian web page. They will then be able to complete their selections online using Edval Choice. (the link to access this is provided at the top of their subject selection form). They will also need to submit a hard copy of their choices to the office by Tuesday 1st September.

We encourage all parents/guardians to have an informed discussion with your child in light of their interests and future aspirations.

Once all the student’s elective choices are submitted, the viability of courses will be determined based on the overall number of students requesting the course, the overall demands of the school curriculum and staff availability.

Please do not hesitate in contacting the College, if you have any questions.

Regards
