‘Working as a Designer’, Swinburne Excursion

On the 6th of May, a few of our creative students travelled to Swinburne University of Technology, Wantirna Campus, for an exciting excursion. The excursion was titled, 'Working as a Designer'.

These creative thinkers were our Year 10 Art, Design and Woodwork students. The excursion was very educational and enjoyable. We learnt about the inclusion of sustainability in construction and technology, and the unique, yet surprising products constructed with recycled and eco-friendly resources. What personally surprised me most, was the usage of piano materials for our own products.

Our 2 products used materials from a ‘Square Grand Piano’, a late 18th century instrument. The wood was piano wood, the wire was from the inner machinery of the piano, and remarkably, there was also leather! Which was also from the inner machinery. Before the excursion, I would have never imagined that products could be made from a square Grand Piano. We were allowed and encouraged to be as creative as possible. There were no restrictions to what we could make. Many students came up with brilliant ideas and products. We had the instructions to make a piece of jewellery and a wooden board that lights up. Some even combined these 2 products together to create 1. That single product would be completely different, far from the original concepts, and very creative.

Some students were even sweet enough to give their products to their mother, for Mother’s Day.

Overall, 'Working as a Designer' was brilliant! We had a lot of fun, it was very educational, and we got to expand more on our talents. We thank Swinburne for welcoming us with open arms for this fantastic experience. We also thank the teachers for organising such a fun excursion.

Food Technology

Can you smell that? Can you smell those incredible aromas coming from the New Food Technology Centre?????

What a privilege it is to be participating in the teaching and learning in the state-of-the-art facilities in the new Food Tech Centre. It is inconceivable how incredible the facilities and technology are, and it is amazing to see what the students are creating and achieving in the world of cooking.

As a junior teacher, we have been busy making many delightful dishes and tempting treats, including Pancakes, Souvlaki, Mini quiches, ANZAC biscuits and Hamburgers.

Intermediate and Senior students have been learning to master the art of Rice Paper Rolls, Thai Fish Cakes, Potato Gnocchi and Chocolate Puddings.

It is wonderful to see the students so engaged in this area of learning, the kitchen area alternating from a loud hustle and bustle of dishes, pots and pans and utensils- to other times being a quiet area with students anticipating their food being cooked, meticulously measuring ingredients, reading recipes and concentrating to make their dishes perfect.

Congratulations students, keep cooking up a storm!
