Year 12 Student Leadership Camp

Summary of Camp Speech presented at Staff Meeting

On the first day of camp we all knew each other, but we weren’t really that comfortable with each other. Over the days that followed, we really came together as a team and began to understand our role as leaders in the school. This also helped us learn how we can collaborate with each other, to continue to make this school a safe space.

On the second day we had a special guest, Drew Ginn come to work with us. Drew is a multiple gold medal winning Olympic rower, part of the Oarsome Foursome. Drew ran some group activities where his main objective was for us to work together rather than being in competition. He was an amazing motivator for our group.  A highlight for us was getting to touch and wear his medals at the end of the day.

On the third day we did the Great Pursuit which was like the Amazing Race where we were placed in teams competing against each other. Using our learnings from Drew, we ended up sometimes working with each other helping opposing teams.

The other skill we learnt as a group was showing initiative and willingness to take on challenges. At different times, we all stepped out of our comfort zones and did things that we wouldn’t normally feel comfortable doing. The encouragement and affirmation from the group really helped to motivate us to do this.  As a result, I have been willing to again step out of my comfort zone and speak in front of you all this afternoon.

Thank you.
