BOOM DAY - KINDNESS CULTURE

BY LANCE DAVIDSON  (DEPUTY PRINCIPAL)

Last Friday we celebrated BOOM Day with the theme - Kindness Culture. It was part of the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. We were able to spend some time discussing what bullying is and getting our students to consider what they can do to promote kindness, all this dressed in ORANGE. There were some random acts of kindness during the day and a Kindness Wall (fence) was set up in Junior & Middle/Senior School. Students took time out to place messages of kindness on the wall during the day.

REMEMBER: Kindness is not a one day activity, it is something we all need to practice daily.

MESSAGE ONA BOTTLE - Year 11 Visual Communication

BY JACINTA LEED (VCD TEACHER)

There is nothing better than a cool refreshing drink on a warm day. However, rather than just taste testing some drinks, the Unit 1&2 Visual Communication class designed their very own bottle label!

Students had to get the paint brushes and pencils out to draw or paint their own imagery for the label design. Using Adobe Illustrator and some fantastic editing skills these paintings and drawings were then transformed into unique digital images that were placed on their label design.   To complete the ensemble, students chose a suitable typeface and added minor but important details such as nutritional information, a barcode and ingredients list.

Well done year 11s for a fantastic start to Visual communication design! It seems as if these bottles are so well designed that they could be soon sitting in the supermarket aisle ready to be bought!

CSEN CHESS COMPETITION

BY JENNY SIMMONS  (SECONDARY MATHS TEACHER)

When a King started telling a bedtime story to all the chess pieces, he said, "Once a-pawn a time..."

Last week I had the pleasure of supervising our CSEN primary and secondary chess teams and enjoyed being part of the conversations that consisted of discussing various chess moves.

The CSEN chess tournament was held here at school in the restaurant. Students played 7 games each over the span of the day and the top individual players from each school were awarded medals.

St Andrews Christian College was the winner of the primary division, whilst Waverley Christian College, Wantirna  won the secondary division.  Our secondary team made all the right chess moves to come second out of 6 schools.

Congratulations to all our students who competed, with special congratulations to our medal winners:

Primary - Louis T (Year 5), Jet R and Sammi C (Year 6)

Secondary - Will C ,Robbie G, Aaron K, Heath L and Will T (all in Year 11)

Individual results:

Heath L was the equal 3rd top player of the day in the Secondary competition, scoring 5.5 points out of a possible 7.  Wow!

Daniel C (Year 10) was awarded the CSEN special secondary prize

Sammi C was the top female player in the primary division

Well done everyone!

YEAR 9/10 FRENCH CITY EXCURSION

BY KATE W (YEAR 10 FRENCH STUDENT)

On Thursday, 17 March, the Year 9 and 10 French students took the school bus to Palace Como Cinema in South Yarra.

As a part of the French Film Festival, we watched "The Fantastic Journey of Marguerite", a film about the magical adventures of two French school girls who find themselves swapping places and living in different periods of time.

We then travelled to the City and were then given some time to go explore the area around Federation Square to find lunch.   Our group went to a whimsical French café, where we ordered chocolate and strawberry crêpes.

All in all, it was 'très bien!'

YEAR 12 OES EXCURSION - MELBOURNE CABLE PARK

BY DANIELLE HARBERGER (VCE OES TEACHER)

The VCE OES class went to the Melbourne Cable Park last week. The class participated in cable kneeboarding and wakeboarding and then had some fun on the aqua fun park.  This trip was for U3 AOS2 Relationships with Australian environments since 1990.

During this unit they have been examining a number of ways outdoor environments are depicted in different media, along with the dynamic nature of relationships between humans and their environment. Furthermore, the different social, cultural and economic factors that influence these relationships.

On this trip they observed and experienced the effects of different technologies, commercialisation and perception of risk which influence societal relationships with outdoor environments.

NEW! The Wellbeing Room – 7/8 SHARED SPACE

BY SARAH JOHNSON (CHAPLAIN- MIDDLE SCHOOL)

The concept of the wellbeing room emerged from needing a place where students and staff could go to relax, reflect, and refresh. In our often-busy days at school which can be filled with noise, action and confusion, this space provides an opportunity to experience peace and calm.

The room provides a soft inviting space for students and teachers/chaplains to talk together about many of life’s difficult moments. Research shows using a wellbeing room for these conversations can significantly improve mental health and enhance wellbeing.

Using calming colours, textures, comfortable furniture, soft lighting, scripture, relaxing activity items and wellbeing reading materials creates an environment that students will want to use and give them ideas about how they can create a similar space in their own home.

My peace I give to you – John 14:27
