Climate Change Workshop

On Monday 29 March, members of NEST had the opportunity to attend a workshop on climate change led by two Casey Council representatives.  During this lunch time session, the presenters explained the goals for Casey Council in regard to sustainability, such as their aim to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2037, simultaneously highlighting the importance of effective and relevant actions being taken to reach this goal. They explained that, without any relevance, any action being taken would not succeed in promoting a positive change to the same degree, and further stated that demonstrating ways for every individual member of the community to contribute to their goals would not be possible.

Throughout the experience, groups of students worked together to brainstorm ideas for actions that the Council could take, to guide the community into a more sustainable way of life, and also shared environmentally-friendly endeavours that were present in their own lives. The workshop allowed students to discuss ways for the Council to reach their goals and allowed NEST members to contribute a unique perspective that has the potential to help to broaden the scope of climate change education being distributed, allowing it to be more relevant to the youth of today. All in all, this session was highly informative and gave attending students a useful insight into the ways in which our Council functions in responding to such environmental issues.
