Furoshiki Workshop
Recently, the school's Japanese classes had the pleasure of experiencing an online Furoshiki workshop presented by Akahane Sensei of the Japan Foundation, Sydney.
Furoshiki refers to traditional Japanese wrapping cloths, and the craft of folding them in a variety of ways to carry and transport goods. Like many traditional Japanese arts, it originated from something with very practical uses- and in recent times has been regaining popularity for its environmentally-friendly nature, and decorative designs. As they are square cloths that can be wrapped using simple techniques (such as a the mamusubi knot), we found that Furoshiki were extremely versatile, and could be used to wrap things ranging from boxes, to round objects and even our laptops!
We had a great time learning lots about this unique aspect of Japanese culture (did you know 'Furoshiki' literally means 'bath spread', as they were used in ancient times to bundle clothes while at public baths?) and attempting the different folding techniques- so don't be surprised if you notice an influx of stylishly and sustainably wrapped objects around Nossal!
