Writing

CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week in Writing, the students will be learning to write Haiku poems.

VOCABULARY

Poem: a typically short type of writing where the author uses imaginative words to share ideas, emotions or a story with the reader.

Haiku: a type of Japanese poetry that is traditionally written about nature. They follow the following structure:

Line 1: 5 syllables

Line 2: 7 syllables

Line 3: 5 syllables

Syllables: The number of sounds in a word. This can be found by placing your hand just below your chin and saying the word. The number of times your chin touches your hand is the number of syllables in the word.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Have your child do a quick brainstorm of everything they can think of to do with nature, and then choose one aspect of nature they would like to write a Haiku poem about.

Get them to write a Haiku poem following the 5,7,5 structure (described in the vocabulary section).

Below is an example:

Snow will be arriving soon.

We should rake the leaves.
