VALENTINES DAY ROSE FUNDRAISER
Hi SCHS,
We would just like to thank everyone who contributed to the annual Valentine’s Day Roses Fundraiser this year. Whether it be purchasing the roses or simply giving an added donation, your contributions were all greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank the Initiatives Captains, volunteers, Ms Nguyen and Mr Hand for facilitating the event. In total we raised $704 which will be donated to the Heart Foundation.
Thank you,
Your Citizenship Captains, Ruhi Rodrigo and Melissa Xavier <3
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY HIGH TEA
Since our last newsletter entry, your school captains and school vice captains have certainly been busy bringing our visions for SCHS alive. One such goal we had as a school captain team was to further celebrate the diversity of our school body, including our female students. After all, this is what makes SCHS special and unique.
In celebration of International Women’s Day this year, Suzanne Cory High School was delighted with a visit from professor Suzanne Cory, who our school is of course named after, for an afternoon High Tea.
The United Nations’ theme for International Women’s Day 2023 is ‘Cracking the Code’, which involves embracing the progress of women in STEM fields, where women are severely underrepresented. As a co-educational school filled with many female students with extensive aspirations and interests in science, hearing from such a renowned molecular biologist was extremely empowering.
SCHS also had the privilege of hearing from some of our female alumni, with insightful discussions across a wide range of careers and experiences. Our special guests were 2014 graduate Isabelle Cahoy, 2015 graduate Alicia Lim, and 2016 graduates Tash Poppen and Chaturi Tennege. These inspiring women are just glimpses into the successes our female students are able to achieve.
The High Tea was an immense success, and a brilliant way to celebrate the female students and staff at our school. We would like to thank professor Suzanne Cory and our alumni for their time, and their moving words.

Keep an eye out for a video of the event which will be posted on Compass in the next couple of weeks.
TABLE TENNIS CLUB
Hey SCHS!
Table Tennis Club runs every Thursday lunchtime in the school gym.
Over this term, as a club, we have fostered an inclusive environment for students at Suzanne Cory High School, where students can have fun, be physically and socially active during their lunchtime and learn a new skill.
This term, we have been working on:
- Getting more new equipment (bats, balls, nets! Come and check out the new equipment we have!)
- Leadership roles within the club
- Inter-school table tennis competitions (potentially a student vs staff competition - get excited!)
Thank you SCHS for an amazing term, looking forward to what term 2 has to offer. Special thanks to all student leaders and Ms Guastella.

MBTI Club
MBTI Club just started this Term and have gotten much interest in this club! Within 2 weeks, we had 50 people join our club!
The MBTI Club is a chill club aimed to enhance student discussion about MBTI and anything related to personality psychology, such as understanding the 16 MBTI types, cognitive functions, enneagrams, socionics and typology!
Given the interest, we now run meetings both on Tuesday and Thursday recesses in G13, so please feel free to come along!
Thank you for your enthusiasm and hope to see you there! Special mentions to Ms Carroll for supporting the club!

Health Cove
We are proud to introduce the Victorian chapter of the global organisation HealthCove to Suzanne Cory! Our team has been working extremely hard to bring SCHS and the wider community a variety of events that target different aspects of public health in order to encourage equity in that sector.
At HealthCove, we seek to support, empower, and provide high-quality healthcare resources to our community in a safe and secure environment. We dream of a world where health is within the reach of everyone, regardless of their background and location. Every community should have the tools it needs to survive. Our success isn’t measured in terms of wealth or profit margin, but by the value we provide to those we serve.
HealthCove is a global non-profit, youth-led organisation, having established chapters in 3 other countries. It tackles issues in public health, such as raising money for not having access to basic sanitary equipment, or raising awareness for those on neurodivergent spectrums. The motto of HealthCove is: “The journey towards health equity & wellness. One step at a time.”
Make sure to check out the things we’ll be rolling out on Compass throughout the year, participate, do something for the community and make new connections along the way.
Give @healthcoveorg and @healthcoveorg.vic a follow on instagram to see what some of the other chapters are cooking across the globe!

Duke of Edinburgh Camp
On Wednesday March 1st, the Duke of Ed class left for their 3 day Adventurous Journey in the Grampians. This involved students setting up and camping in tents, planning for meals and cooking their own food on trangia stoves, and engaging in a variety of activities.
On Day 1, we bussed off to our campsite at Smiths Mill. From here, students were taken to the Northern Grampians, where they completed a 2.3km hike to the summit of Mount Zero where they saw some breathtaking views. From there, we ventured back to the campsite for students to cook their dinner, sit by the campfire with marshmallows, and lay under the stars before bed time.
Day 2 saw an early start for the students, with a 3 hour canoeing adventure on Lake Fyans. The weather was pristine and the water was glassy, providing the students with ideal conditions to explore and learn about the environment around them whilst on the water. The highlight of this activity was the students rafting up to paddle as one big canoe while proudly singing the school song. After a quick lunch break, students were then taken on an 8.1km hike from Zumsteins Picnic Ground to Fish Falls and Mackenzies Falls. Upon return to the campsite, students spent some time trying to spot platypus in the campsite creek, cooked dinner, and sat by the campfire before bed time. This wasn't without our surpise visitor - the resident Emu, who was very interested in everyone's dinner.
Day 3 was a bit more relaxed. We woke up, students packed up the campsite, and we did two shorter walks. The first walk, a 2km walk to The Balconies saw students looking over the mountain ranges on offer at the Grampians, and the second being a 2.5km walk to Venus Baths, where students had the opportunity to relax and unwind in the creek rock pools before heading back to school on the bus.
Overall, the students did an excellent job of representing the school, and should be very proud of their efforts to push themselves out of their comfort zones.
