Principal's Report
Term 1 2023
Principal’s report 8/3/23
Welcome to our first newsletter of 2023, and a warm welcome to the SCHS community to our new families this year. As you may have noticed this newsletter is being published well before the end of the term, as we are moving to two newsletters a term. This will help keep our families more informed about the activities happening at school, and to share more student contributions with you.
At the start of each year I speak to students about our major goals for the year. In 2023 that is to focus on celebrating the great diversity of the school. Our diversity comes in many forms, gender, cultural and linguistic to name just a few. By celebrating this diversity we help to make the school an even more positive and inclusive environment where each individuals contributions are respected. Throughout the year we will focus on different elements of diversity and work with the students to find opportunities to acknowledge them.
To start the year, and linking in with International Women’s Day, we focused on celebrating women who are inspirational to our students. This initiative was led by our 2023 school captains and included posters celebrating a wide range of female figures from around the world. I was impressed by the variety of submissions made by students and learnt a lot from reading the posters they put up around the school. We also hosted our first International Women’s Day event, with our namesake Professor Suzanne Cory-AC, PhD, PresAA, FRS, attending to speak to students about her achievements and the barriers she faced along the way. It is an honour for our school to be named after such an inspirational woman and we were pleased to have her back in the school after a long break for this event. More details, and photos of this event, can be found in this newsletter.
I hope the start of the year has been smooth for all families and look forward to a successful 2023.
