Dear Families/Caregivers

I know at times it is difficult to 'find out' what is happening at school via your child... usually when I ask my girls how was your day I get the "good" or "ok, how was your day?".

St Brigid's has been doing a lot of work with Lyn Sharratt, an educator, researcher and author. Her book Clarity has been used to form our professional learning over the last two years, and she has identified 5 questions that may assist you in conversations with your child's.

  1. What did you learn today?
  2. how did you do?
  3. What did you do if you didn't understand?
  4. How can you improve on your learning?
  5. What are you most proud of?

The question what did you do if you didn't understand is an interesting question... the most obvious answer would be ask my teacher, however we are creating opportunities for students to problem solve independently and provide students with strategies they can use before going to a teacher. Some of these strategies include visual instructions such as anchor charts, bump it up walls , lists of instructions or other strategies such as assistance. Thee strategies are explicitly explained, modelled and taught .

With our learning conversations next week, here are some questions  Lyn also suggests to ask the teachers during these parent meetings.

  1. What is my child learning?
  2. How are they doing?
  3. How do you know how they are doing
  4. How can they improve
  5. What supports can I provide and can you provide if they are struggling? When will we check in again.

Have a wonderful week.

Yours in Love, Peace and Learning
