Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide!

Two out of three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they reach 70. We have one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world with over 750,000 Australians being treated for skin cancer each year – that’s over 2,000 people every day[1].

You are most at risk of skin cancer during times when the UV index is at 3 or above. You can check the daily UV index at www.bom.gov.au/vic/uv/

The Cancer Council recommends these five simple ways to protect yourself from the harms of skin cancer:

1)    Slip on a shirt or other form of clothing that covers your arms

2)    Slop on sunscreen that’s SPF 30+ and reapply every 2 hours

3)    Slap on a hat with a broad brim or one that covers your face, neck and ears

4)    Seek shade away from direct sunlight

5)    Slide on sunglasses that are close fitting and have UV protection

But what about vitamin D? During summer, most people can achieve adequate vitamin D levels by exposing their face, arms and hands to direct sunlight for just a few minutes most days of the week.

Remember, treating vitamin D deficiency is a lot easier than treating skin cancer! If you’re in doubt, speak to your doctor about getting your vitamin D levels tested. For more information about the dangers of skin cancer as well as information about vitamin D, go to www.cancer.org.au/preventing-cancer/sun-protection/

Quit for the Kids

If you have children in your life, whether you like it or not, you are probably a role model to them. Quitting smoking sets a great example for your children, reducing the chance that they will take up smoking themselves.

Talking with your children about how hard quitting is will make them think twice about taking up smoking themselves. As a nonsmoker you’ll also have more energy and more money to spend too.

Smoking kills one in four smokers in middle age. This is the time when kids really need their parents. Quitting now will increase your chances of being there as your children become adults and have children of their own.

Protecting Others

The decision to quit smoking is a personal one but it is important to remember that your smoking also affects those around you..

We now know that children’s delicate airways are sensitive to smoke on clothes, hair and skin after you’ve smoked. It can be hard for parents to fully protect them from the harmful effects of smoking.

The number one way to improve your own health and ensure the health of your family is to quit.

clk2sell App

Do you have unused musical instruments and textbooks in need of a good home?

The clk2sell app is an online market place supported by State Schools’ Relief and the Department of Education and Training to buy and sell pre-owned school uniforms. clk2sell now also allows users to buy and sell musical instruments and text books, making it a one-stop shop for children’s school needs.

There’s no better time than now to upload those unneeded items ready for other parents to buy them ahead of the new school year.

Benefits of the clk2sell app:

  • It’s free and all schools are pre-loaded on to the app.
  • You can save money on expensive school items.
  • You can make money from unwanted items.
  • It’s very simple and easy to use.
  • It saves time.
  • You can buy and sell in the comfort of your home at any time of the day.

Close to 100 schools are now using the app. State Schools’ Relief (a supporter of the app) is encouraging more schools and parents to get on board to reap the benefits. 'Parents are saving 50-70 per cent', said State Schools’ Relief CEO, Stephen Iles.

By being able to purchase school items at a reduced price helps reduce any financial barriers to a child’s education. To find out more visit clk2sell.com.
