Academic Excellence

Off to a great start

Breaking habits, building bridges

WE'VE had an amazing turnout to our first few Academic Excellence meetings. The buzz in the room is fantastic. They are also enjoying the benefits of being close to the new Breakfast Club location (See Page 14!).

Students have learnt about habits and how to improve a good habit or break a bad habit. They were set the challenge to identify a habit, find the triggers and over a few weeks try to slowly change the habit. The students have had varying degrees of success.

More recently, the students have researched different types of bridges, giving examples of famous bridges around the world and the compression and tension forces that are working on these bridges. They have now started their first project, The SNC Bridge Building Competition. Students are allowed to use popsticks, recycled materials or Lego to build a strong bridge, weighing under 800g, that is large enough to span 60cm. We will test the strength of the bridges near the end of the term. Students must also complete a project write-up on their chosen bridge. With their great enthusiasm I am very excited to see what the students come up with.
