Mabo House News
Hello Mabo Students and Families,
Term three has been fantastic so far and our Mabo students have hit the ground running!
There has been a lot happening around the college as always, and we love to see our Mabo team getting involved in the opportunities available to them in and outside the classroom. Our year 7 students had a fantastic opportunity this week to plant a tree in our school community to celebrate Plant a Tree Day. Thank you to Ms Taylor for her leadership of this fantastic event. From all reports the students had the best time and are now budding green thumbs!
In Mentor we have had the Year 10 Basketball Championship challenge grand final at the assembly. Thank you to Mr Knowles and Ms Riley for their leadership of the tournament – the year 9s are up next with Miss JP and Mr Cram and they cannot wait to get this competition on a roll!
I would like to celebrate the students who received acknowledgement of their efforts during the Mid-Year Awards Assembly. These students have shown commitment and dedication to their studies and to our community through outstanding effort in their subjects, extra - curricular activities such as sports, debating and leadership. We celebrated students for 100% attendance and growth in learning. Thank you to all families of award recipients who joined us for this special occasion.
Our year 9 students will be participating in the ILLY program run by external providers beginning at the end of this term. Students will have the opportunity to experience different workshops around respectful relationships.
We are looking forward to celebrating R U OK Day with our college community. There will be lots of events including an arts competition, puzzles, friendship bracelet making workshops, an animal farm, photobooth and much more.
Year 10 students will be receiving a letter to provide them with information regarding redemption of time. If your attendance is below 90% you will be expected to make up time missed before school, lunchtime or afterschool in the CRC. Please sign Ms Glen.
Currently Mabo is on top of the House leader board and we are making waves in the Values Nominations category of the competition. The Mabo team would like to congratulate our students for living our college values in and outside the classroom. Please continue to remind your teachers to nominate you.
Current Stats:

A few reminders:
Practice GAT:
This year we are running a Practice GAT on site in the Gym, on Curriculum Day, Friday 26th August. This is a compulsory day for ALL students in Year 12 and those accelerating and studying a 3 and 4 subject. Please ensure you and your child familiarise yourself with guidelines of the GAT and ask the Senior Student Learning Leaders any questions (aka Mr Marriot!).
Lates to School & Lates to Class
We are working hard in Mabo to ensure your students are maximising their learning time and success with their education. Some students have been arriving late to class, you may receive a letter documenting when your child was late to class. We encourage you to have a conversation with them around time management and return the paperwork signed to Val in the Mabo office.
Homework Club
A reminder that homework club runs after school on Monday (library), Wednesday (e-block) and Thursday (library). The homework club is run by passionate, experienced and knowledgeable teachers, it is free tutoring and a wonderful program for any/all students to be involved in!
Ready to Learn Reminders
Our uniform is looking fantastic in Mabo, just a reminder if you need support in getting items to please come and see your Student Learning Leader and have a discussion so we can support you through State School’s Relief. We know it is very cold still however please ensure no hoodies are worn, long sleeve black or white shirts are permitted underneath school uniform, however hoodies will be confiscated. Please remember that if you borrow a loan laptop you need to return it and sign it back in at the end of the day to Mabo office.
Melbourne Victory and SECL
Junior is back in town to run fun afternoon activities that build connection to community and encourage physical activity. These programs are completely free and a fantastic opportunity to be active and have fun with friends in a safe environment afterschool!Melbourne Victory Soccer program is also running in the gym on Wednesday after school beginning at 1:15pm. One of our alumni Hassan is a leader of this program, and the students have a fantastic time developing their skills together. Head on down!
A message from the new Mabo Assistant Principal – Andrea Bellgrove:
I have moved from Dandenong High School where I worked for the last 7 years. I worked at Rowville SC for 20 years and Berwick SC for 5 years. I am very excited to be joining HPSC as an Assistant Principal in Mabo House and looking forward to meeting students and families across the school. After only 2 days at HP I already feel welcomed by all and feel it is a friendly and exciting place to be! Please say hi if you see me around!
