Year 11 Preliminary Course Examinations

The Preliminary Course Examinations begin next week, Monday 29 August and conclude Friday 9 September. The assessments are all written examinations.

The examination timetable is available on the Canvas Year 11 page and students are reminded to note dates and times of their examinations. Students are also reminded to thoroughly familiarise themselves with the College’s Year 11 Assessment Handbook and Examination Rules for Senior Students posted on Canvas at the beginning of the school year.

Ignorance of the College’s Assessment Policy or examination rules will not constitute a valid excuse and penalties will be incurred for breaches of policy and procedures.

In particular, in the event of absenteeism due to illness or misadventure during the examinations, parents/carers and students are reminded that a telephone call to the Year Coordinator, Mr Fox, must be made prior to 9:00 AM on the day of the examination. Where possible, an alternate paper for the missed examination will be arranged within the examination block period. Immediately on the student’s return to school, a medical certificate for the illness or misadventure must be given to Mr Fox and the relevant Faculty Leader.

In the event of a COVID-19 related absence, i.e., the student testing positive on a RAHT, a PCR test must be taken by the student. The result of a PCR test acts as a medical certificate and Mr Fox must be notified immediately. Note, a medical certificate is required following a negative PCR or RAHT test to confirm the student with cold/flu like symptoms is fit to return to school and resume his examination schedule.

Given the current surge of cases with COVID-19, cold or flu, Year 11 students may wear masks during an examination and are advised to maintain hygiene practices, such as regular washing and sanitising of hands.

I would like to wish all our Year 11 students well for these very important examinations.

Science Week

Last week, we celebrated Science Week at the College. Science Week aims to celebrate everything weird and wonderful about Science. This year due to limited space, we could not run lunchtime shows for our students. Therefore, we organised Science Week activities for each year group in their science classes. Dry ice and liquid nitrogen shows were organised for Years 5 and 6. Year 7 designed and tested parachutes to safely land a 60g raw egg. Although none of the eggs survived their journey from the top of the Coghlan building to the Year 12 yard, our students produced some very innovative and interesting designs. Exploding hydrogen balloons and green flames were part of the Year 8 Chemistry Show. Year 10 students participated in solving a crime scene using forensic expertise.  Year 11 Biology students completed frog dissection and Year 11 Chemistry students created a chemical clock in class.
