Slattery House News

Ms Megan Wandell

Braden Querido - Slattery Mission Captain

Term 2 proved to be another busy term filled with chaos and excitement. For Slattery, Mission thrived throughout the term, with a plethora of Mission ventures occurring.

For most of Term 2, normal Mission activities continued, following the Covid guidelines. Despite some setbacks caused by these rules, the Mission department still found ways to get out into the community and help. Rosies, a charity aimed at feeding the homeless community of Brisbane, was able to restart for the first time since 2019. The night proved very successful, with the boys carrying out their duty of feeding the homeless, as well as conversing with these people. In addition to this, other programs, such as Vinnies, were successful in their fundraising efforts, hosting BBQs every Thursday morning that always sell out. Green Ash also had a significant impact in Mission this term, introducing a plan to reinstate bees into the college community. Ultimately, the bees will help pollinate the college gardens and the boarders’ vegetable patch, while their honey will be used by the boarding chefs for cooking.

Every year, Slattery House is tasked with fundraising for the Salvation Army through the Red Shield Appeal. This year, we were fortunate enough to have recovering addicts and the manager of the Red Hill (Moonyah) Recovery Centre talk to the House. Their speeches highlighted the issue of addiction, and the need to seek early assistance. Subsequently, through a BBQ held a week after the presentation, Slattery was able to raise a significant amount of money for the charity. With the money raised, the Salvation Army will be able to help addicts across Australia back into sobriety and turn their lives around. A big thank you must go to you the boys and their parents for their generous donations on the day. These will surely have a positive impact on the lives of many.

Nearing the end of term, the college held its annual Walkathon. In the weeks leading up to the event, the boys were asked to bring in money that went into the development of the school in coming years. The entire school was able to raise $68,500.00 through donations, while money generated on the day through the sales of food is still being calculated. Overall, the day was very successful, and the funds will be used in the future to update the college through the building plan.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Slattery boys and their parents for their generosity last term. You’ve all been very giving in your service to Mission at school and have been willing to get involved in helping those around us in our communities. Thanks boys.

James Gurr - Slattery Academic Captain

After a very relaxing and eventful holiday, we start Term 3, Semester 2 2022. Year 12 students are in full swing with Unit 4 assessments and the External Mocks looming. Year 11 students are nearing the end of Unit 2 and associated summative assessments. All other year levels need to be starting the semester strongly, and make sure everyone is working hard. With the celebration of Year 12 Academic Awards at the end of last term, we saw evidence of the dedication of the Slattery seniors towards their studies. They have set a high standard for the younger grades of Slattery to follow.

Similarly, Year 10 students are approaching the beginning of their senior studies. They have started looking into their Senior subjects and what they may plan to do after school. This is a very difficult task for anyone so I must commend the Year 10 cohort on their attitude towards the subject selection process. As we start Term 3, more and more extra-curricular activities open up for a range of grades; these include the fan-favourite Tournament of Minds, and Maths/Science Club. There will be information on these and more coming out soon.

Term 3 is nearing the ‘pointy end of the stick’ - assignments get harder, more information to revise for tests, more content to learn. It is crucial for the boys to put in effort when it’s needed, and that is now. Study isn’t just about the sprint at the end, it’s about how much you put in to make that sprint easier on yourself. So, I urge you, the boys, try your very best this term and make it memorable.

Spencer Hollett - Slattery Culture Captain

After what I hope was a very relaxing break for everyone, we are starting this semester off refreshed and revitalised to smash out the second half of this year. I would like to start by reflecting on Term 2 and all the culture-focused activities that took place.

Theatre Sports was an amazing activity that myself and many other boys had the pleasure of taking part in. Over 3 rounds occurring over several weeks, with many practice sessions, the two teams that made their way to the finals were Gilroy and Ridley. The competition was fierce but Gilroy came out on top in the end claiming the prestigious title as champions.

Creative Industries Week was another huge outlet for the creative subjects and groups that are around the school. With performances from several bands to live art shows and activities, there was always something to keep you intrigued or entertained.

Possibly the biggest cultural event also took place was the College Walkathon and Battle of the Bands. The day was nothing short of a huge success raising money for the school facilities as well as bringing the community together for a great day of fun.

With the Ekka break, mock exams and retreats, this term is definitely full of excitement so we have to make sure we are staying on top of all our school work and commitments. There is so much on offer at Marist and it’s important to take advantage of everything it has to offer.

Thomas Prole - Slattery Sport Captain

Term 2 proved a successful period of sport for Slattery House. We had many boys representing our college on the rugby and soccer fields, in Chess and in Cross Country. It was great to see much involvement in the extra-curricular sports last term. Special mention must go to Toby Anderson, Charlie Gribble, Munroe Wood, James Prole and Oli Clements who pulled on the gold jersey to represent our 1st XV this year. On the soccer pitch, Ryan Harten and Year 9 student, James Woolaston, played their role for the 1st XI. Roman Schutt and Co-Captain Zack Newsham did the college proud at Curlew Park in early June, bringing back the Cross-Country Aggregate to Marist for the 6th year in a row. The term was capped off with the inaugural Interhouse Athletics Carnival. It was great to see so many boys putting up their hands to compete and be involved in a range of activities throughout the day.

The June-July holidays saw our 1st XIII head to Mackay for the Annual Confraternity Shield. Toby Anderson from Slattery, along with 21 other students played their best over the 4-day competition, finishing the event with 3 wins and 3 losses. A fantastic effort from the boys.

Last weekend saw 3 Slattery boys compete in the Queensland Cross Country Championships at Yatala. Great races by Will Banner, Zack Newsham and Harry Prole showed off the hard work these boys put in behind the scenes. Good job boys.

With Term Two and Semester One of 2022 all wrapped up, we look forward to continued involvement in sport for the remainder of the year. This term holds the Rugby League, Basketball, Tennis and Track and Field seasons. We will see the Foley 7’s Touch Competition this term as well, so I encourage each and every boy to get out and have a crack this term. Best of luck with the remainder of the year.
