‘Design Tracks Creative Pathways Program’ is a three-day/two-night residential program for First Nations secondary students from Queensland schools. Hosted annually by the Gallery of Modern Art, ‘Design Tracks’ brings together students from around the state to work alongside guest mentors from the Creative Industries. The program provides participants with an immersive experience that enables them to develop skills and build confidence within a peer-led environment. The students explore creative practices, respond to design challenges, gather inspiration and discover new perspectives as they work together on a creative project which allows them to develop an awareness of career pathways in education, art and design. This year, Year 11 student, Troy Manoa participated in the residential programme which included a trip to Stradbroke Island to work with First Nations artist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins. Year 11 students, Keli Law-Palm, Kynan Hale, Gabe Dineen and Kaden Cerfonteyn, also joined Troy on the final day for the half-day programme.

With an audience of more than four million people in over 100 cities and 45 countries around the world, the annual World Press Photography Competition recognises and celebrates the best photojournalism and documentary photography produced globally over the past year. In Week 2, Year 9 Visual Art students were fortunate to view this prestigious exhibition as inspiration for their current unit of work, “The Captured Image” which revolves around the medium of photography as an art form.

Also in Week 2, Year 10 students thoroughly enjoyed their workshop with Mark Paddick, who is an artist and also the cultural projects officer with the Scenic Rim Regional Council responsible for facilitating many public art projects in the region. Mark shared his knowledge and expertise in aerosol art and directed the students in commencing a layered mixed-media painting as part of their current unit, “Youth Culture.”

Finally, we congratulate Lachlan McMillan in Year 9 who is the recipient of Artwork of the Month for the month of July. Lachlan produced a self-portrait in the medium of dry-point etching which depicts a representation of perspective and foreshortening.
