Literacy

The next focus area for our 'Spotlight Series' is Phonics. Phonics builds upon a child's phonological awareness - the focus skill from last week! We use Jolly Phonics in the early years as a common tool/ program to help create a consistent language across Junior Primary classes. We also use a range of mediums (computer programs, iPads, songs, games) and hands-on materials to teach children the foundational skills of English. In the Primary years we use programs such as Words Their Way for spelling to ensure we continue to explicitly teach phonics to students R-7. The following article is a brief introduction for parents to build upon their understanding of the role Phonics plays in the learning of the English language. Enjoy!

Numeracy

At LNPS as a whole school we teach students strategies from Ann Baker’s Secret Code to understand number and solve mathematical problems.

Each week we will include a different Secret Code strategy in the newsletter to provide information to help you understand what your child is learning in class, and practical ideas for how you can best support your child at home.

The ‘Secret Code’ is the name given to a range of mental strategies created by Ann Baker (Natural Maths).  Each strategy has a code that is used by students when solving problems.

The next in the series is Rainbow Facts.

Double and Near Double will feature next week .....
