Acting Head of Senior Years

Mr Rodney Latham

One of the many opportunities that comes with living and working in a multicultural area like Wyndham is interacting with so many different people and learning about different customs, ideas, and traditions.

Reflecting on those things learned leads to empathy – what some thinkers and writers suggest may be the most important trait to develop.

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Sometimes we confuse empathy with sympathy, and although both words are derived from the same root, sympathy involves understanding from your own perspective. Empathy involves putting yourself in the other person's shoes and understanding WHY they may have these particular feelings.

As I was researching, one writer suggested that empathy is stronger than sympathy. Empathy goes beyond feeling compassion for another’s loss. It is the ability to put yourself in the place of another and understand someone else's feelings by identifying with them.

This led me to the following images.

How do they make you think and feel about empathy? Take a moment and be mindful of empathy – putting yourself in another’s place and how they feel.

I think that may be one reason why Jesus’ life is so important – this along with His death and resurrection showed Him to be the Empathetic Saviour.

Year 12 Christian Studies

As part of the Year 12 Christian Studies theme on Encouragement, the students started making paper chains with inspirational statements to encourage the Preps of 2023. The paper chains have 30 links, that the 2023 Preps can tear off to count down to when they start their next journey at Good News Lutheran College.
