RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS – Term 3 Extended Pastoral Program

The focus of our Social/Emotional learning thorough our Extended Pastoral program in Term 3 is Respectful Relationships. This builds on the focus from last term on Emotional Intelligence, where students reflected on their own emotions, feelings and ability to regulate these.

At Nazareth we explicitly reflect and constantly aim to embed our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. All three values form a large part of our discussion of breaking down and  understanding exactly what it means to have ‘respectful relationships’.

Every day we are having to navigate the relationships we have with all sorts of people we come across, whether that be family, friends, teachers, work colleagues, romantic partners, acquaintances and even strangers. For a positive, healthy and happy day, we want these interactions to be respectful, no matter what the situation. We all have both rights and responsibilities when it comes to maintaining positive social relationships, and our program helps to be able to identify what these are.

Sometimes this can be challenging, especially when we come across others with different values, ideas and opinions. The more we can be aware of challenges and consider ways to best manage our responses and behaviour before the event, the better the outcome will be. People don’t always behave the way we expect, and we need to be able to come up with ways to deal with conflict and disappointment.

In our program, we evaluate strategies to manage relationships and social changes that occur as we grow older. We reflect on the benefits of relationships and we can examine their impact on our own and others’ health and wellbeing. We look to recognise the characteristics of healthy relationships and explain how certain behaviours that can impact relationships in a positive or negative way.

Of greatest importance is respect for all people, no matter our differences. We celebrate the dignity of each and every human and know that each person is a gift from God. We celebrate our diversity as a community and expect respect to be show at all times, no matter what our differences may be.
