Feast of Assumption of Mary

On the 15th of August our school celebrated the Assumption of Mary.  This is a doctrine of the church that teaches that after her earthly life, Mary was assumed , body and soul into heaven. The celebration took the form of individual class liturgies with prayers and songs devoted to Mary.

This celebration recognises the reward Mary received from God for her faithfulness and devotion to Jesus.  Mary's reward is a sign for us all about the grace of God we may receive for a life of faithfulness and devotion.

Mary's example is a blessing for us all, and especially women, as she cared for her child with love and grace through all the difficulties she endured as a young mother.

The Assumption recognises that Mary was assumed into heaven under the power of God where we find Mary sitting at the left hand of God.

Jesus who sits at the right hand of God ascended into heaven to be with the Father under his own power. This is a major difference between the ascension and the assumption.

Class Mass

Today the Year 1 students attended Mass at Good Shephard Church.  The children managed to walk to church without getting wet and had a great time singing, reading, praying and acting out the Gospel.

The children also enjoyed the cupcakes made by parent volunteers to have after Mass.

Soup Making

Soup making continues in mentoring groups at St Gabriel's School.  Each student in the mentoring group helps to make soup for the homeless through the work of the Moore Street Centre.

Every child in the school has been placed in a mentoring group which consists of up to 15 children in their house team.  This is a wonderful way for the children to mix and support each other throughout the year.
